Up until about 2 months ago, I thought I would be using Sonlight for my 5/6 year olds next year, but now I’m not so sure. Now, I’m leaning toward SCM, but I’m nervous about using SCM history modules. I’m an educated person in every other subject, but history is a huge weakness of mine. I really need to find a curriculum that will spell it all out for me, so I really understand what is (was) going on and am able to keep up with the kids. At this early age, it doesn’t matter much, but as they get older, I’ll be learning right along with them. My question is: will I be able to keep up with SCM History? TIA for any advice!
I feel exactly the same way…educated in everything except history! I feared teaching history more than any other subject because of my own inadequacy. We have used the SCM modules for 2 years now, and I have ds8 and dd7. The SCM modules are easily read and used, well thought out, and cover good subject matter. I definitely think you’ll be able to keep up with these modules. I have learned a lot myself!
I have found that I need to substitute a resource here and there, and that scares me more than anything. If that happens to you too, you’re at the right place for help!
I’m amazed at how much history I learn alongside my kids…..not sure how I spent so much time in h.s. and college and didn’t seem to learn hardly anything about history!!!
You’ll be fine. I like to add in Truthquest History guides for the biblical commentary. They really help me to see the big picture and provide some good discussion for my kids. We’ve only used the SCM books so far…looking forward to the guides next year! Blessings, Gina
History wasn’t my strong point, either. Just by following the schedule in the Free Curriculum Guide it’s become our favorite subject!! I’m learning with my kids….
I am so happy to hear all of this. I plan on starting with one of the SCM modules for end of summer beginning of fall. I think I will be buying it soon so I can look over it and perhaps come across some of the books at goodwill or a yard sale. I do plan on using the library as well, but would like to buy some of the books that would be a benefit to our library.
Thanks, for the input everyone. I do feel a little bit better. I guess the only way for me to know for sure is just to jump in and use them. Just one more question: What are “the guides”?
I think that HiddenJewel meant that the free curriculum guide was good, but the Module will walk you through each subject (history/geograpgy/Bible) by telling what to read everyday in the subjects. The modules are guides that use several different books to teach, so after you buy a guide you will need to find the needed books (see free downloads in each module for Resources Needed) or make some substitutions.
I really like the way it is laid out daily for the family, with additional assignments for older children. I like that they are easy to use, no teacher prep, and that my kids are getting a good solid foundation of history and understanding that everything really does link together. =)
