Hi, I new to CM, but I love the organizer! I have four children, ages 14,12,10 and 8. The 14 and 12yr. do a lot of their work on they own. The 10 and 8yr. need my help with their lessons. The books I use for my children are McGuffey Readers, Ray’s Arithmetic, Wordsmith (older children), Mrs. Silver’s Phonics (for my 8yr.),Spelling Power, Abeka’s Cursive writing, Apologia’s Physical Science (14yr.), Apologia’s Zoology(12,10,and 8yr.), B.F.Books (Early American History (Family), Independent reading (living books), Swimming and Art Classes at the Y.M.C.A. I think thats all?!
Plus, before I start Ray’s Arithmetic, we are using the CM Your Business Math Series. We are having a lot of fun with that!
It seems like we never finish everything. And I am exhausted by the end of the day. I want to give my children a good education, but I also want it more relaxing. Is there something I am doing wrong? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love your ID name by the way! I don’t know if you are doing too much but I can ask some other questions that may help. At least, these are the questions that a wonderful older godly woman has asked me from time to time when I say the same thing you have! This may seem like a lot; but you can feel free to throw these questions out if they do not apply.
Are you daily seeking God the Father for direction and resting in His care and love for you and your family? Is your marriage still getting the attention it needs? Have you checked out your curriculum choices with your husband and prayed over the selections alone and together? Do you have a schedule? Do you plan to have a flat-on-back time for you, Mom, during the day? Are routines in place that would help to facilitate your mealtimes and get everyone where they need to be when they need to be there? How is the telephone behaving? Are the children growing in their habits (especially attentiveness)? Sonya’s book is great for this one, by the way.
Another thing I might suggest is for you to take two weeks and do nothing but survive. That means children only do their lessons that are totally independent, you all strive to get meals on the table and a minimum of chores done. The other thing you personally concentrate on doing (and this is the reason for all of this) is to sleep.
*Blush* I guess I did get in a little deep. Please forgive me. That’s what I get for being on the internet when I should be tending to the small child whining by my side. Humility is good for me.
For all your wonderful questions! Yes, I did a lot of praying on this curriculum! DH lets me decide the curriculum, but I always share my passion for choosing the books/curriculum with him. I always ask God to be with us everyday! With the other children in PS now, the phone doesn’t start ringing until after school.
We do Math, Reading, Grammar/Phonics, Spelling, and Cursive Writing everyday. History on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Science on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Art Classes at the Y.M.C.A. on Wednesdays. Church on Wednesday nights. Swimming on Fridays.
I did just order Planning Your Charlotte Mason Education and Laying Down the Rails.
It just seems that by the end of the day, I’ve been on High Energy all day long!!!!
It sounds like you have a good variety spread throughout the week. Could your two older children help with the younger at times? For example, could one of them oversee the younger’s Spelling? Just an idea.
I love Cindy’s suggestion of taking some time to back off, refresh yourself, and regroup.
