I was just about to post the exact same things.  So…. any ideas to add to the pot on creative, non-flahcard review of letter sounds/phonics? Here are some things we’ve done: make silly sentences on post its and rearrange the words on a whiteboard, we play Letter Muncher with a plastic box that only “eats” things starting with the letter we’re doing, we play with letter magnets to review sounds, add on different letters to make new words, and this summer making their own alphabet books (ds5 and7).

That’s what we did this year, resulting in ds just turned 7 yrs, reading one simple book with lots of help but no other progress, really comfortable with about 1/2 of the sounds. My Mom, who is a ps teacher for preschool, said I should have done all this long ago, he really should be reading, writing, and doing basic math before entering “1st grade”.  I reminded boys can take longer and I’m ok with that, but it made me feel so bad, like I messed him up.

All other subject areas were a year 1 level (we followed SCM guide, module 1etc), but will declare this fall is our year 1 (but moving on to doing next modules, etc) to continue to work on reading (will use All About Spelling level 1 as well and Christian Liberty Nature Reader K).

Any encouragement would be great right about now! ….
