I can’t believe I am even considering this for my son, but he’s twelve now and has never had an electronic device of his own. He would like something computer-ish, but I don’t want him playing video games a lot or being exposed to inappropriate material. So I thought a reading device like Nook would be an option.
Anyone have thoughts on this, positive or negative?
We’re getting the Kindle Touch for our 14yo son and if we like it, will get one for our 11yo daughter the next time a large gift is in order. I don’t think I would like one myself, valuing the holding of an actual book too much, but they seem to be positive in many ways.
Hi, I am brand new here – but I do have some input/advice on this subject as I did extensive research on this for last Christmas. My son is an avid reader and I really wanted him to have an e-reader. After much deliberation – I settled on the Sony e-reader Pocket Edition.
Amazon Kindle: Awesome, but NO WAY at all do disable internet in a reliable manner. You can turn internet “off”, but if your child is remotely good at the computer, he will quickly figure out how to turn it back on through amazon.com website. The reason I found this to be a negative is because I am a realist. There is no way to limit the websites the kindle visits. I figured handing my kid a device that could easily access pornography with no ability for parental controls wasn’t my idea of a good gift. LOL.
Same issue on internet with the Nook. I decided on an e-reader that has no web capability and books have to be downloaded via a USB connection. He still loves it, we still have tons of books on the device for him – and we are constantly getting him more. He just can’t web surf on it 🙂
Charity671, I like your idea for the e-reader. My whole hesitation with these devices is the web connection and I’m glad to know there is something out there that I can feel good about my son having all by himself. Thank you for sharing!!
