Does anyone here have one?  How much is downloadable to it compared to the Kindle? Especially FREE stuff 🙂  I see quite a bit online that is in Kindle format but not sure about for the Nook?  Do you surf the web on yours?  How do you like that part of it? Also how does the size compare to the Kindle?

I have one, just got it a couple of weeks ago.  I can get anything a Kindle can get–my son rooted it for me, so I can get any Nook book, any Kindle book, any epub, and any pdf.  I have LOTS of free books.  I get magazines.  I surf the web, that works well.  What I specifically use the web for is reading webzines so I don’t have to sit at the computer to follow my professional journals and stuff like that.  I like the size–it is bigger than my mom’s Kindle but I am old and the bigger screen size is nice.  🙂  My son also fixed it so I can get Android apps, so I have a complete free set of indexed and linkable scriptures, and he loaded some games on it.  Touch hockey, etc.  I think he put those on for HIM and not me, lol.  Although he liked my Nook so much that he went and got a tablet after I got it so HE could have one.  I like the color part, although I know that makes it different than e-ink.  But I like the color pictures in my  magazines–I get Taste of Home on it, especially, that I like to see the pix in color.  It has a geography game app also that I let my youngest use when he gets antsy, lol.  I really like the thing, I was a very dubious potential e-book-er but I like it a LOT more than I thought I would.

thx….. honestly I would probably use it quite a bit for reading blogs, msg boards….. and my laptop is so cumbersome for that…would really love something size wise like the Nook.  I would also download FREE stuff for school.

I am afraid though I will be disappointed in the ability to access blogs and read stuff online……

I don’t know why–the keyboard isn’t bad, it’s pretty easy to enter in addys, and you can resize the page as you read.  I read my Freeman issues and several journals online, and have no problem–I just enter in the address, bookmark it for one-touch returning, click on the links, and read what I want.  I don’t type in comments on my Nook, as when I leave one it is usually fairly long, so I do go to my desktop for that–thumb-typing isn’t my thing, lol.

I use my Nook Color for surfing the web, reading blogs and message boards all of the time.  I have not had trouble using it to post on message boards either (except for this message board – for some reason my on screen keyboard would not come up when I clicked on this box, I had to come in here to my laptop lol).  On some blogs it automatically goes to the mobile version of the site, but it is easy to click on the regular site button.  I love my Nook color!

another question….. I have HEARD that you can take Kindle books you have downloaded (I have PC version on my laptop) and transfer them to the nook via Calibre???  Not the same thing as rooting which I understand voids any warranty.  I do have some Kindle books I would love to put on the Nook if I get one but if I can’t no big deal… just wondering if it was an option.

Also, I thought it was mentioned we can download to the Nook from Christian book??? But maybe I am wrong because I looked and didn’t see any option like that over there…

In my opinion, the 7″ screen on the Nook Color is just a bit small for some documents like PDFs that can’t be reflowed. That’s the reason Apple said they were not making a smaller iPad. If you plan to use the device for much web use or lot’s of PDF files then I’d recommend going to a store to try one out and then try out an iPad too. The iPad is a good bit more expensive but there is a huge difference in what you get for the money in screen size, screen quality, ease of use, and applications available. If you really only care about book reading then I’d save the money and go with the Kindle.

I did a little video a while back on choosing an e-reader device for your homeschool. It was done pre-Nook Color but it might still be useful to you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUlVFruTfVs

Hahahahaha!  I just have to tell you that I clicked on this thread thinking someone was wondering what color to paint a breakfast nook-probably for a school area- shows how “with it” I am!Undecided

Anyway, the Nook sounds neat, I hope you enjoy it!  And let me know if you need ideas for a breakfast nook color LOL

Son says you can hook up headphones to do any normal format audiobook.  I haven’t done this yet myself as I’m not good with audiobooks.  No WMA support, but it will play MIDI. Pandora is loaded on the Nook Color out of the box.  The speaker isn’t terribly loud but it could be worse.  I annoyed a son last week with game sounds, anyway, and had to turn the sound down!

The screen size for pdf’s isn’t too bad if you turn the nook sideways and then size the page so that the text just fits in the 7in the long way and it works for these middle-aged eyes.  Not too much trouble.  It is harder if you try to read one “upright”  I happily read my version of “Hearing and Reading, Telling and Writing” in this way and did just fine.  So it works well for me.

There are ways to get calibre to convert Kindle books, but all of them are technically illegal, as they involve removing the books’ inbuilt DRM (Digital Rights Management), which restricts copying and converting to protect copyrights.  Rooting it allows you to install the Kindle reader.  Took son about an hour or so.  Ds says he’ll send a step by step if someone wants to root one.

You can convert “Kindle” books if they are the public domain ones from places like Project Gutenberg…. it is ones that you download from Amazon or buy that it would be illegal to do.  And those that you can convert, can be converted without going through steps like removing DRM, as they won’t have DRM.

I haven’t had any trouble reading PDFs on my Nook, including those from SCM.  Laughing  Some I do turn sideways, like Bookworm, and it has worked fine for my middle-aged eyes too.

I use headphones with mine to listen to music (MP3s that I have uploaded to the Nook from my computer), sermon podcasts and other audio.  This uses the regular music app.  No problems with the sound quality using headphones.  Now, sitting on my table with no headphones it certainly isn’t as loud as a radio, but I would not expect that.  I have not used the Pandora app very much, but that is due to my slow (living out in the country) internet connection.

Re: CBD – I know they have books in ePub format (what the Nook uses), but I have not bought one yet to see how it works with the Nook.

I can’t think why you’d want to put books in Kindle format from Gutenburg–if you are on Gutenburg why not just download the epub?  I have more epub books on my Nook than any other type, they work wonderfully, many are widely available for free.  The only time I would want to download a Kindle book is if 1) I already had one or 2) it is the only format in which that book is available…

I have a Nook Color and I really like it. My son rooted an SD card for me so when I have the SD card in I have an android type tablet.  I downloaded the Kindle app to read Kindle books.  If I take the SD card out I have my regular Nook Color back and so the rooting does not affect the warranty. Actually they now sell rooted SD cards on Amazon so you don’t even need the tech savvy son to do it for you.

Bookworm is right epub books work wonderfully and yes you can use headphones to listen.

I have surfed the web with just my nook color and also with my rooted SD card.  Both work well but I think the SD card seems a bit faster.  I downloaded or sideloaded(whatever you call it) an app called Pulse.  It is free on both the Nook Color and the Android.  I set it up with the blogs that I like to follow.  We do not have high speed internet in our home.  So I go to the library and update Pulse and then all the new posts come in.  When I get home I can read them easily. I just can’t see the pictures people add.  Those work if you have wireless though.

I really like the size better than the ipad but mostly I just didn’t want to spend the money for the ipad.

    Blessings,

    Suzq
