We are new to SCM although not so new to CM ideas. Up to a few months ago, we used MFW from K-CTG and Queen HS here and there. I have 5 children 9 and under so i finally hit a point of realizing that i can’t keep up with all of MFW’s curriculum since it is so parent lead, although I LOVE it. So, after reading Managers of their Schools i decided to go for a more independent curriculum for my 9yo and focus on reading for my 7 and 5yos. For my 9 yo I stuck with MUS, Queen HS Language Lessons, but went with BJU history and Abeka science, health, and Rod and Staff spelling. I went with Explode the Code for my 7 and 5yo with some MFW 1st grade thrown in. Lately, i’ve realized how much i miss the group time we had with MFW. We don’t do much reading aloud anymore or working together. So…i saw the email about SCM’s new history books and they caught my eye. I have spent lots of nights lately reading all i can about CM education (SCM is amazing) and i think a lot of it will fit for us.
I was thinking i could pick up a history time period and just go with it. My younger kiddos haven’t studied US history yet so i thought we’d start there with the new stories of america book and add living books and activities along the way. So here’s my question: Is that enough? I ran across the modules and epistles book and like the idea but am afraid of becoming a slave to it again like with MFW. Can i do this without it, or would i be foolish to skip it? Also, if i do modules, can i start with #5 us history or do they need to go in order?
I am also planning to just read through the CLP Nature Readers for science and try Spelling wisdom for my 9yo. Since my 7yo is not reading well yet, i’m thinking about Delightful Reading and letting my 5yo tag along if she is interested?? For copywork i printed out George Washington’s Rules of Civility to copy/write and am planning to make up Nature Notebooks. We’re sticking with MUS and Queen LL. also, i love the history timeline notebook idea so we’ll be starting that soon.
Does all of this sound about right? Am i missing something important or neccessary to make this work? Just trying to sort everything out 😉 Would appreciate any ideas or feedback!
I can certainly speak to the choice of history module 5….that’s where we started this year with 10yo, 11yo, and 13yo. There is some logic to it in that my oldest will complete modules 5 & 6, then 1 through 4 by the time she graduates. But I must confess something: I mostly picked it because my favorite part of history is Early Modern Times (especially US history) followed by the Civil War era.
We did not use SCM’s guide/handbook for history, but instead used a lot of living books. They have been great read-alouds for the entire family, although my oldest reads the 7th grade selections on her own.
