My ds will be in 2nd grade next year and we are moving to Central NY, so I want to do a History study of our new town as well as the entire state (get to know our surroundings – I’ve lived in TX my whole life!). I can find tons of living books on NYC, but not much pertaining to the rest of the state’s history. Has anyone does a study of New York state that has some living books they can recommend for a 7 yr old?
Mary Jemmison! She’s was originally from PA, was kidnapped by Shawnee indians, and given to the Seneca. She lived with them her whole life, even after having the chance to return to “her own people”. She lived in the area that is now Letchworth State Park.
I read it aloud when our son was in 2nd grade. We loved the book, but her family is killed, and they talk about that in the book incase you have sensitive children (or are like me, and couldn’t stop sobbing through that part!)

Laura…do you have any trouble finding fellow homeschoolers in the area…in the Dallas, TX area, I am surrounded by homeschoolers and more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon every year…so I’ve been concerned about finding a local group once we get there…I think I’ve been spoiled down here 🙂
