I am switching to SCM starting this fall for my son’s 3rd grade year. Up to this point we have done a fairly standard curriculum. I love the CM methods and principles, but I am having a hard time giving up a traditional Language Arts program. I am concerned about him just doing the dictation for spelling and English. How do you trust the process enough to know this is the correct route for my son? He would be thrilled, as he is not a fan of the writing and worksheets. Should I continue with a traditional language arts program until I can ween us off it for next year….I would utilize all other aspects of the curriculum…..or do I trust the process and go all in? Thank you in advance guys! I appreciate your wisdom and experience!!…..
I am on the All-In team. I did not trust it and have tried a plethora of reading comprehension, grammar (too early), spelling, and writing programs that made a real mess of things. I wasted a lot of time, money, and progress. I caused undue stress on myself and my children. I flip flopped; which just caused confusion and learning hiccups. What did we do to get back on track? Simply returned to CM methods of language arts. My daughter writes beautifully now at 13. My son is 10 and finding his own voice in narration and finally getting comfortable writing. Bookworm gave a prime example of stumbling the writing process while using Writing With Ease on another thread. I too have experienced the same conversation of: No, that is unnecessary information, less wonderful details please… eek! really? Did I just say that, sigh. I think we struggle with the unknown and think we will do the best job by mimicking school at home, when we first start home schooling. Read a while on here. You will find the veterans have good things to say that will encourage you to dive in. Really get to know Charlotte Mason this summer, read, watch any of Sonya’s seminars if you can. Equip yourself to inspire them in a whole new way of learning and feasting on good things. That can help you trust the process and guide your children confidently in unfolding into the people they will be.
