I apologize ahead of time if I am asking a question that is clearly answered in all the text.  I am switching to SCM for the next school year and doing my planning.  I intend to use Genesis through Deuteronomy and Ancient Egypt.  I don’t have access to a library, so I will purchase all of the books.  Do you buy them all in the beginning or add as the year goes along?  Thanks!

I like to purchase all the books I will be needing for that school year before we start. That would be all the family books and whichever ones are assigned for the grade level of your child. I try and order as many as possible used from abebooks.com and that can take 2-3 weeks to ship. Anything I can’t buy use I order on Amazon prime.

I buy our books a little at a time.  We have Amazon Prime and Rainbow Resource has free shipping over $50.  Each month I try to order $50 or so in books.   I also buy used books and they can take a bit longer to ship…some take several weeks!  I try to have most of our books ordered before the year begins, but it’s nice to place an order mid-year and pick up something fun like a game or puzzle or art supplies.

I ordered mine at the start of the year as well so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it later on. I found many used on Amazon.

Hi!  Welcome to SCM.  Kayla mentioned abebooks.com, that’s the cheapest place I’ve seen to get books.  I also use half.com, and then amazon if I can’t find things on either of those sites.  There are a few things on homeschoolclassifieds.com for SCM also.  If you have a kindle, some books are there, or you can find one that’s close.  Have fun!

I like to have all of our books ahead of time.  I don’t want to be shopping mid-year and waiting for a scheduled book to arrive.  I like to preview them and make sure they are a good fit for us.  I buy at betterworldbooks.com where they have sales like 6 for $15, free shipping.  I have also used Amazon, eBay, homeschoolclassifieds.com, and libraryanded.com which is wholesale to homeschool, libraries, churches, and schools.  They have weekly sales and carry new resources from Master Books, Focus on the Family, Your Story Hour and more.  They carry the Louise Vernon books used in module 4 and History Lives series on church history.

As several people have mentioned, you can purchase all the needed books ahead of time. Another option would be to purchase the books needs for each term—the lesson plans are divided into three terms. Each of our history/geography/Bible lesson plan books includes a book list at the beginning of every 12-week term so that you can gather just the resources you’ll need for that part of the course. You’ll find those lists at the beginning of each term in the lesson plan books.
