Hi everyone! I’m new to homeschooling, my oldest is in Kindergarten this year (age 6) and the other three are currently 4.5, 3.5 and 16 mo. I am not using any curricula per se this year but next year decided that I need more direction and really like what I found here at Simply Charlotte Mason. However, with my oldest being only in First Grade next year I don’t know how I am to fit everything in with her and the younger ones with them all needing so much guidence! Will I just have to push her to do more on her own?
When my children were that young, if they were all up and not taking naps, I gave my younger ones big crayons and paper. Something to keep them a little busy. If it was a subject that my son and I needed more quiet time, I would wait until my little ones were napping. I don’t know what curriculum you are going to use, but personally I would not go with something to structured. Especially, with all the little ones you have. I also have 4 children, and I really can’t remember how I did some of the things I did back then. LOL Enjoy the Journey!
For a first grade child, Charlotte recommended doing lessons no longer than 15 minutes each, some shorter. So it might be helpful to start “practicing” with your littler ones to train them to play quietly in 15 minute increments. Start with a 5 minute “hush time” (or whatever you want to call it), then gradually increase it by one or two minutes every week or two until you’re up to 15 minutes. Doing two or three “hush times” spread throughout each morning, with nice breaks in between, might work well. Then when you’re ready to officially start school work, they will already be used to that concept.
KJ’s suggestions are great. Here are a few more ideas for Preschoolers in the Mix, collected from other moms too.
