We started our school year just over a month ago using a classical curriculum, and I would like to transition to a CM-style of curriculum. I’ve received so much wisdom and have been reading quite a bit about CM. My 4th grader has pretty strong reading comprehension skills, but the style of literature is somewhat new to him with classical and CM. I read in 4th grade, children should read their materials on their own. We clearly have a habit of me still reading to him or us taking turns. He is certainly capable of reading on his own. He enjoys me by his side, sometimes too much, but is there anything wrong with working on attentiveness and continuing to read to or with him? We can certainly work towards less of this.
Nothing wrong with it at all – you can read as you are building his narration skills. As you both are getting more comfortable with that, you can transition the books over to him.
Absolutely nothing wrong with reading history aloud! You can always work on transitioning to him readings some of the lessons on his own and narrating them back to you (maybe once or twice a week) and grow independence from there, if you like. Sometimes, it’s nice to share the material together. Also, depending on the text, history can be a bit difficult (there’s a lot going on); hearing it may be easier. You can use the narrations as your guide to how well he comprehends what’s read aloud to him and what he reads on his own, as well.
