This is my first time posting a question- I’m excited for some helpful feedback!
My daughter (6) will be starting first grade homeschool this fall and I’m new to the CM method. We’re coming from a classical background, but I’m very excited to move toward the CM lifestyle. My question is, I’ve been seeing some conflicting advice about whether or not I should even do a history curriculum for 1st grade, so should I or not? A friend of mine is doing MFW and I love how the History curriculum is centered upon the Bible, and I think that the SCM History modules do the same, am I correct? My daughter is bright and eager to learn new things, so I’m not worried about it being too difficult for her to understand, but I do want to make sure we don’t overload ourselves with too much. I love the idea of doing Bible and a timeline with history, but I’m not really sure where to begin.
If you do the SCM study, I would suggest a children’s story Bible instead of the actual Bible readings. The readings can be pretty long for young ones.
Another option would be to hold off on formal history lessons for awhile. Pick a few American history biographies appropriate for her age. D’Aulaire books are really fun for younger ones…even my older ones love these. We didn’t start formal history until my oldest was in 3rd grade.
Thanks for your input! The idea of not doing history kind of makes me panic… ha! I feel like that’s important, but maybe I could do like you said and get some historical books to read through.
I have fallen in love with SCM and the CM way of thinking and I guess I just wanted to go “all in” and do everything SCM suggests- but maybe I need to take it slower?
I would totally add in the enrichment subjects and the individual studies. There will be plenty there for her to do. History is up to you, but I think it will go best if you hold off a bit.
