WE are excited about trying CM this year, and will be using a module for American History ( our kids are 11 and 13).  They only want to do American History for now, we will do World History next spring.  My question: Do we have to purchase the specific titles listed (ie Landing of the Pilgrims) or will similar books related to the topic being studied suffice?  I do not have a copy of the Early Modern and Epistles yet, so I was wondering if it asks questions in the daily lessons specific to the books they suggest.  The reason being, I have an many books on pilgrims, presidents etc (great used bookstore locally!), but I want to stay in line with what the daily lesson plans require.  thanks for your help!

I believe that most of the books listed can be substituted pretty easily. The SCM Team usually state that you should feel free to use what you have. I tend to be the type that wants the exact book b/c I am not comfortable with tweaking those type of things, but that is a flaw on my part, lol, not b/c it’s not able to be done.

And, I believe most of the “questions” are opened ended, like, “Tell me what you can remember of our last reading of…?” Well, you just substitute the title in that phrase.

I’m sure others will chime in and can even give you a book title that they substituted and their experience with it. I tend to think that there are some books that may be harder to sub. and keep the flow of the lesson, but I’m sure it can work.

HTH, I’m suppose to be out of the house already, LOL.

There are no questions in the daily lesson. The student reads (or listens) to the books and does oral and/or written narration. At the end of each term there are tests that include a question which the student can answer using the material they have learned from the books and through his narrations. So as long as the material is being covered I do not see a change in book choices to be an issue.
