I have been using a box curriculum but cm seems very interesting but also very confusing. How do you know whats books to get or even where to get them or have I missed that somewhere.

Have you looked at the curriculum guide on this site? That should give you some guidance in possible selections of books. I think some of the ladies here use this guide as is; others tweak it to meet their families needs and interests; some don’t use it at all, but enjoy the fellowship here!

    Welcome!!

Hi Cooker. “Charlotte Mason” is a method of homeschooling, not a curriculum, as you probably know already. As such, there is no set of “CM” books or a specific place to purchase materials.

I use amblesideonline.org to guide me, though I tweak just about everything to suit my family’s needs and interests. But I use that site as a framework for subjects and for schedules, then I plug in my own topics and materials. I love to research appropriate books, but if that’s not your interest, the amblesideonline website, along with this great SCM website and other CM websites provide WONDERFUL (absolutely wonderful!) suggestions.

When it comes time to gather books, I get them from several sources. Many old books are available online for free. Sometimes I will print them off if I’m in a time crunch, if I’m unsure the book will interest us, or if I can’t find a copy.

Usually, though, I like to buy my own books. I get them from amazon, Rainbow Resource, abebooks, bookstores, used bookstores. I enjoy the quest for books, but you can probably find everything you need on amazon.

You can also use the library for books, too, since textbooks are not generally used with CM. However, since we go through the books slowly and because the books are wonderful, we usually want to own the books. I use the library to supplement our studies, but if I were on a tight budget, I would use the library more extensively. The good thing is that the “living books” used for CM generally aren’t the most popular books in the library, and you can usually renew them a few times. A friendly librarian will make it possible for you to use the books you need, I have discovered.

I’m not sure that answered your questions, but feel free to ask more questions. It is sort of “fuzzy” to get used to the style of CM education if you are used to a box curriculum. But it’s fun, too!

    Best of luck to you.

    Cooker,

I was in your shoes about 2 yrs ago. I agree strongly with the ladies, read this site from front to back. Ask lots of quiestions, someone here will answer you. Also, for me the 1st things we did was just use the bookfinder and start reading aloud and narration. Also, adding things like copywork and we were already using Math-u-see. Then it was just putting one thing in at a time and working it all into a schedule.

Good luck and you will love this site it has it all and great friends who will help along the way!
