I just began using Charlotte Mason this year and my children 13, 10, 9, and 8 are not loving it as much as I am. This makes me so sad. They do not like the narrating and are questioning if they are really “learning” anything because our lessons are short. I am trying not to get discouraged so I hopped on here to hopefully get some suggestions and/or advice.

My older two took a little while to get used to narrating. They didn’t get why they had to tell me what I’d just read. But we persisted and I explained the logic behind narrating to them – that it’s how they learn– a number of times. I don’t know they they lovely but they do it without complaining now.

I remind my children that narration is instead of worksheets and comprehension questions. They prefer narration to the other two choices.

SCM has a bookmark download with different ways to do narrations, which brings variety.

I made the mistake of asking for too many narrations per day and rushing through each subject which made CM feel schoolish and product driven. I am working on learning to slow down and enjoy the day.
