So, I have given up on the mentoriing program we were trying this year. I am keeping a few of the subjects, but for the most part, it was stressing me out, like when we were doing AO.
So I grabbed my plans I had worked out, changed the history (I had originally planned to do middle ages, but the mentoring program was doing Ancients – so we are doing Ancients.) I was able to plan that one subject very quickly as I had a spine already picked out from before, and just needed to add in a few other books… I checked SCM modules for suggestions in the age range, plus a few other sources… and I have a plan!
SO – our new system.
First, I do use the organizer… so that is a main part of it, to tell me what next. I had tried to figure out a daily plan using the Planning your CM Education, but just had troubles with the figuring out the order of things in the day.
So, I took some index cards of various colours. White is family, Blue is my oldest (boy), Pink is my 2nd (girl), and Yellow is my 3rd (toddler). And put the subjects for each day on a card. Some say things like “History or Geography”, and there are a couple of Rotation cards (M-Picture Study, T-Shakespeare, etc…), and jotted the aprox time for each subject.
I then worked out the order I wanted to do things so there was a mixture of activity types…. for non-family things, I would put a card of each colour of things that could be done for the same time… so one child doing individual reading, while another does grammer with me – things like that…. a few say other children get a break. I numbered them small in the corner (in case the cards get dropped one day)… and added in a few cards saying things like “Jumping Jacks”, etc. The organizer will tell us which book or what resource we are using that day in the subject.
The beauty of this? When life happens (like it does, especially with a baby in the house), and we don’t get all the cards done, I’ll just stop the cards where we are, and we can start with that topic the next day. So we won’t always miss the same subjects.
I’ve been trying to do the same subject with everyone at the same time, but that’s making me crazy. I love this idea. I think I’ll give it a try. Especially this year, they are needing more individual attention than ever.
Thanks for sharing!
