I’m so excited to see new SCM products and these handicrafts DVDs will make my oldest girl’s day – she’s 10 and has a relatively non-crafty momma. Now we can learn together or she can learn and teach me!
Suzukimom-that is awesome! My almost 5 yo loves to watch me sew. He is fascinated with how machines work and those are skills that a man might need someday.
FWIW, My husband is an aircraft mechanic and every so often he has to use a sewing machine to sew things like seat covers and I don’t know what else…so yes, sewing IS a useful skill for boys too. =)
I’ve taught my boys to cross stitch. I want them to learn other sewing techniques (after I learn them!) I remember reading that the fishermen who made the big nets for their fishing also knitted the beautiful, warm cable sweaters to wear on their fishing trips. The women were busy weaving or spinning. I do a lot of things but sewing is not one of them. My home ec sewing teacher in high school got in my face one day and shouted, “You see this gray hair??? It’s got your name on it!!” Traumatized me for life.
My dh earned a home ec award in HS. He was about 6’6″, 285lbs at the time, and he’s even bigger now with a full beard and usually wearing camo, which makes for a great photo op as he’s teaching our girls to use the sewing machine. Yes, “tee hee”, but I am so blessed by this manly man. Thanks for the new resources, SCM!
Oh, that reminds me when I was a Scout leader (at that time Boy Scouts (it is now co-ed in Canada)), and wanted my scouts to know how to sew on their badges. Although I had never got complaints from them, I was worried about them not wanting to do it because it was a girl type of activity.
So, I asked my Rover Advisor (Rovers are like scouts, aged 18-26) if HE would come and teach them. He is also a gib 6’6″ guy that looks like someone you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley…. He can sew on badges much better than I can. (He can hand-sew on a badge so that you can’t see a single stitch… even if you used a differen coloured thread. he didn’t teach them that, mind you… just the simple method…)
I didn’t have a single complaint…..
(btw, Delta (ds8) sews on his own cub badges – and also sewed on a button that came off of his sister’s overalls (that one was for a badge requirement))
You know, it just occurred to me that one of these DVDs together with all of the supplies needed to make the projects all together in a nice box or basket would make a lovely Christmas gift….
