I really, really like the Helene Guerber books that have been reprinted at Nothing New Press. http://www.nothingnewpress.com/guerber.shtml Their Story of the Middle Ages might work well for at least your 9 and up children. Then I’d visit the lists here and other places for some more “fillout” sort of things. Your older two could easily add in some serious biographies, there are lots of fun action type books to entice that 11yo and 9yo, and you could get some easier books for the 7 and 5 yo’s and add in some fun activities for them. I’ve seen the Famous Men books used for many different ages, but with my own kids I’d probably only use them in upper elementary and junior high type ages–they are more a series of small biographies than a continuous history. That isn’t all bad–biographies are great! But if you want more of a narrative flow you’ll want to do something else.
One very nice thing about the Guerber books is that they all have plenty of maps, and in the back she has a timeline and a list of recommended further reading that can help you “adapt up” and “adapt down” for your many different ages.
You have several options. At Yesterday’s Classics their are many history books available for several age groups. If you punch on the TAB of HISTORY, a spine that goes younger than the Guerber history is Streams of History ages 8-10. You could use it for the younger set ( 9, 7, 5, maybe the rest could be in the room working on independant projects or occupying the 2 yr. old). One that is for ages 9-18 under TAB of WORLD HISTORY is M.B.Synge’s On the Shores of the Great sea. In addition to the spines, there are the wonderful James Baldwin Books. In fact, you can also get them on Audio at Jim Erskine’s homeschool radio show. Maybe they’re free at libivox, I don’t know. The younger ones will love those stories (probably the older will learn something too!).
To go deeper, pop onto the individual TABS of GREECE and ROME and you’ll get several choices for your age children to read individually or as a group. Remember, the 17 and 15 yr. olds are capable of reading to the younger ones to contribute and help you!
Now, as for the church history, go the TAB for FAITH and you’ll see some books there.
Here is the connection so you can browse. If you have questions, they are very good about getting back with you.
