Hello everyone! I’m new here and checking out everything Charlotte Mason. This is my first yr homeschooling (although I did do a for a couple yrs with my now grown children 20 yrs ago!!). I currently have a DD-6, DS-5, DS-19mos, and DS 7mos. I’m doing K with my 6yr old and preK with my 5yr old. I’m looking into what to do next yr. I’m very drawn to the things I’m learning here on SCM but my question relates to the order of teaching history. I lean more toward wanting to start with American History and going back to ancient when kids are a little more mature. Can the modules on SCM be used out of order, starting with 4, then 5,6 and then returning to 1? Did Charlotte Mason advocate starting with ancient and moving forward chronologically? I have been considering using Heart of Dakota, but by planning my own curriculum using these guides, I can go at my own pace and go in depth wherever we want to. Any advice??

    Thank you so much,

    Cheryl

    Hi Cheryl!

I’ve bounced all around for the past three months trying to figure out what I want to use to educate my two girls.  I hope you find this site as useful as I have.  I am really impressed by all of their resources, but the one that I would recommend hands down is the All-Day SCM Seminar.  The best part about it is she describes the reasons behind the method and demonstrates narration with the adults there.  I can’t express how this DVD changed my entire way of thinking about education.  I have Charlotte’s original volumes and am reading through them.

I have Genesis through Deuteronomy and 106 Days of Creation.  I’m going to start them after Christmas.  I’m still acquiring all the books from this list and some from AO, mostly used, and am really excited to start.  Can you tell?

This forum is full of wonderfully encouraging and helpful people.  I hope they can answer your question about the history cycle.  From what I’ve read, you can jump in anywhere; but if you haven’t covered ancient history yet, her spine and book recommendations are great.

    Blessings,

    Cindie

Catherine Levison is a CM educator who advocates starting with American history (or the history of your country if you’re not from the USA). She can explain it better than I can. Check her website http://www.charlottemasoneducation.com/ or her books, A Charlotte Mason Education and More Charlotte Education. I’m debating whether to use TruthQuest for Young Students, which is US history (I’m watching a copy on ebay for dirt cheap) or putting together my own.

Thank you for the responses. Cindie, the all day seminar looks great! I will definitely be looking into that one. Keep me posted on how things are going for you!

Thank you for the link, nerakr!! I’m so glad to see that the CM way is so flexible! I, too have been wanting to use TruthQuest for American history. I also just went and reserved 2 of Catherine Levison’s books from my library.

I’m glad I joined this forum!
