Hello, I’m new here and I want to do CM but I don’t want to buy the modules at this time due to finances. I was wondering how I go about making lesson plans out of the living books? I’m kind of confused with that. My children are in 4th and 7th grade and I will be taking them out in mid year. I found a great math source but as far as science and social science goes I cannot find any descent ones. What do you suggest? I’ve done a lot of research on this but I am new to homeschooling and really just don’t know where to start.
You can use the history modules without buying the handbooks from SCM (though I long to have them–maybe next year), and to be honest, we have purchased very little for history this year. We have the great blessing of having a county library system that links its interlibrary loans to several other libraries in Ohio, and there are two nearby suburban libraries that are very well-stocked. So, I have been able to borrow a lot of the books we need.
As far as scheduling the books, I believe that the books for each grade in the SCM history modules are listed in chronological order. So, you could just select which books you want to use (if you’re new to CM methods or new to homeschooling, I wouldn’t recommend trying to use all of the books for a grade level), then just read through them 20-30 minutes per day, and I think the SCM suggestion is 4 days per week. The 5th day of the week can be used for geography.
If you want a bit more specific direction, you can locate your chosen module’s handbook in the SCM bookstore and click on the sample download. It will show you the order in which things are scheduled, and you can arrange your planner using that information.
We are following Module 5 this year but I didn’t buy anything other than “The Story of the World” (hardcover for $15 on Amazon) as a spine for the time-period. Between books I have on my Kindle and our public library, we have the rest of the books in the module covered.
We are very lucky in that our local library has their cataloy online. I spent one evening a few months ago making a spreadsheet of the SCM-recommended books for the module. Then I checked our library online and made substitutions when necessary.
Of course, it’s more time-consuming than buying the SCM materials, but it is a good alternative for a family that has to be budget-conscious.
