With all of the recent news stories regarding online security, I’ve been wondering how much all of you pay attention to security on websites.
Do you take note of the little secure lock icon most browsers show when you purchase online? (We have that, of course.) How about when you go to a site that shows the green address bar? Do you notice that and feel more secure?
I’m going to be completey honest, and admit to not checking on any of this stuff. I don’t even know what you’re referring to when you say the green address bar? LOL I always pay with Paypal, though, which I was under the impression it was pretty safe? I should probably pay more attention. Any other advice, Doug, on how we can tell if sites are safe or not?
I pay moderate attention to site security. Places I feel are “safe” I don’t worrry about. If I need to buy something and its only available on some random unfamiliar site I feel is sketchy then I scrutinizre things a lot.
I have had my Paypal hacked once (they tried to use over $1400), my credit card hacked twice (once during our vacation in March…tried to charge five transactions for over $1100) and my debit card three times (including the Target thing over Christmas…I don’t use a debit card anymore.). I pay a LOT of attention.
I pay moderate attention. I have noticed the green address bar, but didn’t know really what it was. I just assumed it was the same as the little lock symbol. Typically, before I put in my credit card info, I check for the lock symbol.
@Robin: I’ve started using my debit card more (never online, only in person at stores, never at Target b/c I use a Target card there). My bank pays “rewards” of $.05 for each transaction. I wonder if I should forgo a couple nickels each month!!
@Curlywhirly: I do the same thing – if I’ve ordered before from the site (or have an emotional attachement–like this site!) I am less likely to scrutinize.
I always worry about sites that keep your credit card info make it easier to check out. If it’d be any safer, I’d just as soon pull out my card and type in the numbers again. (I nearly have them memorized anyway *L*)
I am with Phobo…I only buy from a few places online so I don’t ever check. I have complete faith in y’all so I don’t worry about anything…am I, perhaps, naive?
I pay close attention to all things security, especially when I need to register at a site or order from a site. We’ve experienced CC a few times. Not fun to straighten out!
Both times we’ve experienced credit card fraud weren’t from websites at all. It happened when our cards were scanned at a machine and someone was sitting in the parking lot or behind a counter, collecting the info electronically through the credit card scanner! Once from a restaurant, and once from a major chain store. So scary! I prefer using PayPal online, but no matter what security measures you take, credit card fraud is always a risk. I wish we could get away with just using cash, but since that’s impossible with online purchases, we continue to take the risk.
The first time, we had over $1500 stolen out of our bank account in less than 24 hours and the second time it was about $260. Both times, our bank was alerted through Visa security, and we were able to cancel the cards and get all our money back. It was so frightening to even think that we might not get it back, but I guess that’s what FDIC and those major credit cards insurance is for.
I don’t buy from sites I don’t know well. If I find an item on a website I’ve never been to before, I always try to find it on Amazon and buy it there instead. Glad to know SCM is paying attention to this!
Wow, LIndsey, that is SCARY!!! The only time my info has been compromised is with a Target credit card at Target this winter and once before – I didn’t even know it, Visa called me and told me to dispose of the cards, that new ones were in the mail.
I guess it’s ok to admit just how 1950’s we are in our home? I/June Cleaver don’t have one single thing to do with money. Nada. Nothing. I spend it. I think that’s as far as I’m aware of what’s happening to it. I leave all that to my man! Happier marriage. Happier Claire. I do notice that my husband is ultra diligent and aware with all the accounts … he’s one of those down to the penny/I-am-on-a-first-name-basis-with-everyone-at-the-cc-company kind of guys. I’m more of a rounder. Hence the arrangement over here!
Doug, I do have a security question for you …. I’ve noticed that on my Macs some websites are coming up with a triangle with an exclamation mark in it now (in the toolbar) and they used to not do that, ever (I always saw the padlock). Yahoo is the site I notice it most on. I wonder what’s up with that?
That was hilarious! I’m a lot like you. I don’t pay the bills, don’t go to the bank, don’t call the cc companies, nothing. And I love it. I spend it, or ask if I can spend for larger purchases. I know we get paid twice a month, and I know that we pay our house payment (the largest chunk) on the first of the month. And that’s about it. Hubby and I are good about budgeting for things together, but as far as the day-to-day managing of the finances, I’m not it! And I really like it that way!
@Claire, What browser are you using on your Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.)?
Regarding @LindseyD’s story. It’s much safer to use your credit card online with a reputable website than using it in the physical world. We have way more regulations online that we have to pay attention to. Who knows what happens to your card when you hand it to the college student waitress and she walks away with it where you can’t see!
What I was most interested in was if you notice the cues in your web browser, like the lock or green bar. I’ll explain why after I get some more feedback.
