I am trying to come up with some good books for his independent reading. He needs something that will capture his attention from the beginning. I want to find some good literature that he will want to read. I’d love some recommendations please.
momof3Participantbumping up. I know I’ve seen similar posts but can’t seem to find them.

Redwall Series
nerakrParticipantThese are my standard recommendations for this age group:
Henry Huggins series by Beverly Cleary
Homer Price by Robert McCloskey
Cricket in Times Square books by George Selden
Little House series (if he hasn’t already read them; if he prefers boy characters, he could read Farmer Boy)
Black Stallion series by Walter Farley
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
4myboysParticipantI am in the same situation with my ds8. He is an excellent reader, (high school level) but doesn’t like to read on his own. He loves to be read to, though. We’ve read Homer Price and Charlie and the Chocolate Facotory and Farmer Boy. He’s not very interested in the rest of the Little House books, though his older brother (nearly 12) does like them. I’d really like to get him into something that he will read on his own beyond Geronimo Stilton.
momof3ParticipantThanks everyone. I’ll look into those. We are doing Little House in the Big Woods as a family and hope to do the rest of the series but my boys do get a little bored with it.

More that he may really enjoy would be:
The Thorton W. Burgess series “The Adventures of ….” the characters are engaging and are featured in all the books. That really appeals to some of us… =)
The Trumpet of the Swan
Stuart Little
Justin Morgan Had a Horse, Misty of Chincoteague, Brighty of the Grand Canyon and others by Marguerite Henry
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Sign of the Beaver
Trouble River by Betsy Byars
For when he is older:

Twice Freed, by Patricia St John
Wonderfully engaging books based on real life events (Bible times) with a Christian message
