My family and I are currently living in NC and due to circumstances beyond our control, we will be moving to OH in the next few weeks. I have only schooled my children in NC and am a bit confused on where to find the laws for OH homeschooling. Could someone offer me some good websites to read? Could you give me some guidance on your experience with schooling in OH? NC is so home school friendly that I must admit, I am nervous about schooling them anywhere else. Where can I find a list of support groups?

Thanks in advance for your input. May you all have a wonderful New Year!

The HSLDA website should have the laws for OH. I am in Mississippi, so I am not going to be much help with OH laws. Maybe there are others that may be more knowledgeable of the OH requirements.

Also A to Z Home’s Cool website has a list of support groups listed by state.

This is the link for Ohio groups…….http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regional/OhioSupport.htm

Try these links! Hope they help!

The Christian Home Educators of Ohio group might also be helpful, Donna.

Hello from Ohio! I just registered here so I could tell you how easy it is to homeschool in Ohio. I’ve been reading the posts on this forum for a while and just never posted anything. You don’t need to be nervous to homeschool in Ohio. I have to say, we looked at living in NC a couple years ago, and I was nervous about it because I didn’t think they would be homeschool friendly.

In Ohio, you just fill out the very simple notification form, and do your thing. At the end of the year, you either have a teacher evaluate your kids–what a pain–or give them a standardized test. We use the Iowa Basic Skills test. You can give it to your own kids if you have a degree. I don’t, but my Dad and brother do, so that’s easy too. I hate the standardized test thing, but I just tell the kids not to worry about it because it’s just what we have to do to comply with the law. I make sure they know that it doesn’t matter how they do as long as they do their best. They’ve always done great anyway.

    Hope that’s helpful to you.

We lived in Ohio 4 years ago.  We choose the teacher option.  We were in Dayton and had a wonderful homeschool mom that kept up her teacher’s certificate to do the evaluations for fellow homeschoolers.  I actually loved meeting with her.  She was very encouraging and even helpful when I was struggling with a certain area.  We did CM then too and she was all for it.  I found her through the PEACH group.  I could probably get the contact info. for you if you are going there.

Sorry for being negative about having the teacher evaluation. It was just very hard for me to find a teacher. No one would do it for various reasons; one of which was, “I don’t believe people should homeschool, and I won’t help anyone who does.” At that point, I stopped asking teachers. But I wasn’t in a support group. I think that would have helped me find someone. The testing option really is easy for us though.

Thank you all for your input. You ladies make it sound a lot easier than the website I read. They made it sound like I had to give a huge report of books and schedules ahead of time to the school superintendent and things like that. In NC we have to do the standardize test so thats no big deal, I have to admit the teacher applying it made me nervous. I never thought of finding a homeschool mom with her/his certificate. The thing that made me nervous is I have one student that I KNOW is not at her “grade level” and the thought of her not passing a test that could prevent her from being schooled at home almost made me cry. (That was an impression I received from reading the website).

THank you for your encouragement. Now I can continue to pack with more peace in my heart.

BTW, we are moving to a small town outside of Dayton, so if you could send me the contact info for the support group that would be wonderful.

    God bless you all–Donna
