In follow up to my last post…we just finished 2 great chapter book series and are in search of some great read alouds. After finishing Narnia, and both of Chuck Black’s Kingdom series, I am looking for something that my kids and I love. There is something great about your kids begging you to read “one more chapter” and enjoying a great book together. What are you all reading that your kids love? (My oldest 2 are 8 and 5). Thanks! (If you don’t know about Chuck Black’s books see previous post).

Laura.boraParticipantBoth my girls and boys loved the All of a Kind Family series. We’re only about halfway through the first 5 little Peppers book, but so far my kids are loving it as well.
TristanParticipantWe are enjoying Swiss Family Robinson right now. Past hits at our house for that age:
By the Great Horn Spoon
The Secret Garden
Charlotte’s Web
Trumpet of the Swan
The Twenty One Balloons
Little Men
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (and the next several sequels)
2flowerboysParticipantAt that age, my boys begged for more Boxcar Children as well as Charlotte’s Web, Trumpet of the Swan, Black Beauty, Daniel Boone from The Childhood of Famous Americans series.
missceegeeParticipantAnything by E.B. White
All of Tristan’s selections
Dangerous Journey
The Hobbit by Tolkien
The Lion’s Paw
The Little Britches series (some coarse cowboy words in the first couple, but easy to edit out if reading aloud)
Strawberry Girl
Little House series
many from Lamplighter Publishing (& their audio dramas) incl.
Hedge of Thorns
A Peep Behind the Scenes
Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince
johnnyyvetteParticipantI agree with the above suggestions.
We’re also enjoying the Berinfell Prophesies series by Wayne Thomas Batson & Christopher Hoppin (Curse of the Spider King, Venom & Song, and the 3rd book we haven’t read yet). It’s similar to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series, and my 6 & 9 year old love them. We checked them out from our church library.
csmammaParticipantIf your kids enjoyed Narnia and the Kingdom series, they may also like the The Viking Quest Series by Louis Walfred Johnson, The Terrestria Chronicles by Ed Dunlop, and The Door Within Trilogy by Wayne Thomas Batson. The other suggestions above are also excellent!
jeaninpaParticipantSome friends told us about another author who we’ve come to enjoy — Piet Prins. His books aren’t typically available in libraries, but can often be found used. He has a great series on the Dutch Resistance during WWII. His books are always accurate and appropriate for all ages. My kids were 6-12 when we read these and they all begged for more. He also has a series about a dog, Scout, and another series about an Eskimo boy. All wonderful!!
I agree with most of the books already mentioned as well, but if someone is looking for something new, I highly recommend these.
MandiParticipantThank you for all these suggestions! I’ve added them to my list and look forward to reading some great books. 🙂

flobee76ParticipantOur kids are still quite young, so we’ve not gone through too many series. As a family, we’ve read through:
The Little House on the Prairie Series
Little Pilgrim’s Progress
Charlotte’s Web
Chronicles of Narnia
There are a few more and I can’t think of them (pregnant brain).
QueenMamaMemberWe’re currently reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon (with my 5YO) and we both love it! By Grace Lin. I had never heard of it but found it on a book list, and it’s excellent.
