    Ladies,

I could use some recommendations for some free art curriculum.  I have 3 kids (15, 11, 10) who are all very artistic and thier poor momma just is not!!  I’m interested in some free resources for any type of art-sketching, charcoal, oil pastel, acrylics, watercolor, etc.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Meagan,

These are two sites that might be useful in searching for a way to do art or a curriculum, sorry I can’t be of more help.

One of my dearest friends was a high school art teacher and still is an artist herself and she said the best thing to do is experiment but buy good quality art supplies, visit art museums and read about and look at everyday for at least 30seconds, some of your favourite artists and styles. Put up prints around the home for a good amount of time. Better to know alot about one thing than nothing about everything!

We are able to obtain some lovely white clay for sculpting in our region, which we are lucky enough to be able to fire and glaze if we wish at a friends house.

    Blessings,

Here are some book ideas that are often available at a public library:

The Mike Venezia books give a short biography of many artists.

A series by Gladys Blizzard, “Come Look With Me” is also good for a short biography and art appreciation.

For actually doing art projects:  Usborne has some great books with how-to and history.

My two favorites:  Discovering Great Artists by Mary Ann Kohl and Kim Solga.  I love it! The book is divided chronologically into art periods.  Each page has a short bio of the artist and then a suggestion for something to make in the same style.  For example, on the DaVinci page children are encouraged to find something to take apart and then sketch the inside, labeling the different parts.  (That would appeal to my engineering-type child)  Another page has instructions on making paints with eggs like artists did long ago.  (That would appeal to ALL my children.)

Another favorite is a book by Rosie Dickens (Dinkins?) and I can’t remember the name of it.  It is similar to the previously mentioned book but includes fewer artists.  It does have large, colorful examples though that really appeal to younger children.

I have seen all of these books at libraries, so I hope you can find some too.

May I piggy-back on this thread and ask a question?  I’ve heard many people talk of obtaining postcard-sized prints, but I can’t find a place to get them.  Any answers?  Thanks,

    Jean

Dover has them.  I also post the painting of the week as my wallpaper on my computer.  We’re studying Monet right now.

As far as free art curriculum, I’m no help but sounds like you’ve gotten great advice.

Sometimes they’re hard to find on the Dover site, so here’s a direct link to all their postcard-size books of prints.

I’ve tried and like Artistic Pursuits, though it isn’t free. http://www.artprojectsforkids.org has some good ideas, too.

One of the books at our local libraries is The Usborne Art Treasury by Rosie Dickins.  Perhaps that is the one Jean was thinking of.  It contains 22 works of art by various artists with an art project to complete after each one.

Another library book we’ve seen (but haven’t yet used) is The Usborne Book of Art Ideas by Fiona Watt.  This one is all about painting, and it discusses materials and techniques for painting with acrylics, watercolors, chalk pastels, and ink.

I think it was Barb at Harmony Art Mom who strongly suggested obtaining a calendar with artists prints, very easy to come by.

    Hi Meagan,

My son so wanted to work in pastels and I had no idea where to begin.  We’ve now done two of the pastel tutorials at Hodgepodge Mom’s Homeschool Highlights.   They are put together so well and are so enjoyable that my son has asked to do them all.

Thanks for the link to the Dover art cards.  That is exactly what I was looking for, but couldn’t locate at the Dover site.  Perfect!

And yes, the Usborne Art Treasury by Rosie Dickens is the book I was referring to.  I love that one and so do my kids.

    Hi ladies!

Sorry for the delayed response, but thank you, thank you, THANK you for the great suggestions.  I’ve enjoyed going over all of them and picking some of the projets we’ll be doing this year.  We’re starting today going through some of the pastel tutorials.  I am so excited!
