Would love your input on a good Latin resource for my almost 9 and almost 5 year old. My husband took Latin through school and really wants me to start introducing into our school. He said it really helped him with science and so on. Plus he loved it. I am looking for just a gentle introduction at this point and something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I love Song School Latin but it is too expensive. Any ideas?

Your 5 yr. old is actually a little young for Latin. Latin requires a basic grasp of grammar that a 5 yr. old is too young to grasp.

Are you interested in classical Latin or ecclesiastical Latin?

Britney, I agree with Rachel that 5yo is a bit young.  We begin Latin here about 9 (we do Spanish until then).  An inexpensive good basic beginning, especially if you do not yet know Latin, is Getting Started with Latin.  You could use whichever pronunciation you like, it is very inexpensive, and you could transition to whatever program you liked when ready.  For my children, I use Latin in the Christian Trivium with excellent results (it is ecclesiastical pronunciation).  But it really makes little difference; my oldest has done Latin with ecclesiastical pronunciation all his years of study here, and he recently visited a college Latin class that used classical pronunciation, and he had no problem at all.  The professor told him he likely wouldn’t.

I second Bookworm’s suggestion of Getting Started with Latin as a beginning intro. I think you’ll have to use someting else when finshed, but I don’t what that would be.

We’re going to be using Latin for Children starting next year for my 11 yr. old. I want the DVD for when I’m not available, my son can watch it and use it independantly.

Hope you find what you’re looking for!

I’ve never used Latin for Children, since we already had a program we liked, but it may very well be a thing for you to look into, Britney.  It is not high unless you do want the DVD’s, and even then it’s not too bad.  We use the same company’s Spanish for Children with pretty good success, and I think their approach likely to work even better with Latin.  If I didn’t already have all the books in the series I use, I might have been tempted to look into it in the earlier years.  I don’t know what they recommend for after completing their books—Rachel, what is it they recommend?  Henle??

After LfC A, B (and maybe C, I’ve read of people skipping C and going into LA 1), comes Latin Alive 1-3, a middle and high school program starting in the “7th” grade.

On the Classical Academic Press site they recommend:

    • Q: What curriculum do you recommend for students who have completed LFC?
    • A: The Latin Alive! is a three year, middle school to high school curriculum that we offer and is a wonderful next step for Latin for Children graduates.
    • If you choose to look into another program, we recommend a “reading based” program, such as The Oxford Latin series, Ecce Romani, or the Cambridge Latin series.

Henle is recommended over at Memoria Press after Latina Christiana II.

I am getting some things new (at Christianbook) and some used/new (from Amazon), so that my final price is lower than the bundle price. Plus, the activity book isn’t necessary, unless you just have a child that likes that sort of thing (one of mine would, and one wouldn’t). You can also search the well trained mind forum for the For Sale items and you may score there. Foreign Language support is the only thing for which I will plop down a goodly amount of money at one time (at least until high school math comes around!Cry); otherwise, I spread my purchases of living books throughout the year.

I have experienced in our Hebrew studies, the value in interactive DVD, CD-ROM and audio learning helps; at least if you want the foreign language to really stick for the young ones, IMO.
