need help with war of 1812 books

    Wow – SCM is always improving itself… at first I thought I just hadn’t noticed the “voices” column on the forum before, but now I can see that there are several new changes.  Doug and others:  thanks for all of your constant hard work to make our lives easier!!

     

    Okay, onto my real question:  I would love some book suggestions relating to the time period around the war of 1812 in American history.  I did check the bookfinder, but was hoping for some more suggestions.  My kids are age 10 (gr. 5), age 8 (gr. 3) and age 6 (gr. 1).  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Smile

    Justin Morgan had a Horse by Marguerite Henry is a good book for this time period. We used it as a read aloud for the entire family (ages 10 to 12 at the time) because my three love her books.

    I just ordered The War of 1812: America’s Second Fight for Independence

    I don’t have it yet, so I can’t speak to its worthiness,but I had a hard time finding a book about that time period as well.  This one was listed in All Through the Ages. 

    There is also American Army of Two, which would be a reader for one of your younger children that is set around that war…

      one that we have is part of a series: Life in the New American Nation. I recommend all the titles (they cover more obscure topics that usually get glossed over that were important to the NAtion in those early years), but here its the one specific to the War of 1812:
