I have been looking for a solid bible, history, geography for my high schooler who is going to be a freshman this year and was looking at switching to SCM for Bible, History and Geography for him. I am struggling with all of the other curriculums that are heavy into mythology or hit and miss with geography and bible….I have the rest of my curriculum as far as science, spelling, grammar but am just struggling as to what is best with bible history geography… he is a good reader (not a Great reader). His favorite book is the bible. and then does decent with history books and books like Beowulf and epic of Gilgamesh but not so much with books like Homer. …..Not sure what to do……How do we get through all 6 books of SCM in 4 years? Do we just do 1.5 books in 1 year? any help would be so greatly appreciated….
I had a freshman last year, our first year with SCM. I did year one with everyone and then added in extra books from modules 2 &3 for my highschooler so she would cover all of Ancients in one year. Then rest of my kids just did year 1 at the normal pace. My highschooler did the geography and Bible from year 1 with us.
I faced this last year. Although I do prefer SCM history, we used Beautiful Feet Ancient History last year so that we could transition to the last three books of the SCM history cycle for the rest of high school. I don’t know that I would recommend this solution, as BF used Streams of Civilization as one of the spines (and I find it unpalatable) and the lessons were very long. Each lesson takes 2 and sometimes 3 days to complete, with each session being longer than we would prefer (but we felt we needed to keep that pace to finish in our school year). We did read some very good books, too, however, and enjoyed many aspects of it. Hope you find a good solution for your family!
1. Simply read the Bible DAILY and make his Book of Century entries as he progresses through each book. If he does this, the connections will easily be made as he is marking it. He could do the Discovering Doctrine book if you desired it.
2. Divide his year into three terms of 60 days each and assign as follows:
Term 1 = Ancient Egypt
Read Ancient Egpyt and Her Neighbors and The Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt, Motel of the Mysteries – these are the required reading, and he can choose either The Cat of Bubastes or The Golden Goblet.
Have him read it at least 1/2 hour 4x week and narrate it someway – making sure to enter important dates/people in his Book of Centuries. At the end of the term, give him some of the exam questions from the module. You may need to adjust the time for reading based on his speed.
Once a week he would use the Visits to Africa book, using Hungry Planet and Marterial World to complete them. He will not finish every.single.map drill, but if he combined about 3 lessons per week (which would not be hard from what I have seen of the lessons) he could become quite familiar with the African continent.
Term 2 = Ancient Greece
Read The Story of Greece OR The Story of the Greeks, Black Ships Before Troy, The Parthenon, as the required reading and choose The Wanderings of Odysseus or A Young Macedonian in the Army of Alexander the Great as additional readings.
Have him read it at least 1/2 hour 4x week and narrate it someway – making sure to enter important dates/people in his Book of Centuries. At the end of the term, give him some of the exam questions from the module. You may have to adjust the time required for reading based on his speed…
Once a week he would use the Visits to the Middle East book, using Hungry Planet and Marterial World to complete them. He will not finish every.single.map drill, but if he combined about 3 lessons per week (which would not be hard from what I have seen of the lessons) he could become quite familiar with the Middle East.
Term 3 – Ancient Rome
Read The Story of Rome OR The Story of the Greeks, The Bronze Bow, Augustus Caesar’s World OR Beric the Briton by G. A. Henty and For the Temple by G. A. Henty
Have him read it at least 1/2 hour 4x week and narrate it someway – making sure to enter important dates/people in his Book of Centuries. At the end of the term, give him some of the exam questions from the module. You may have to adjust the time required for reading based on his speed…
Once a week he would use the Visits to Europe book, using Hungry Planet and Marterial World to complete them. He will not finish every.single.map drill, but if he combined about 3 lessons per week (which would not be hard from what I have seen of the lessons) he could become quite familiar with Europe.
Other options include using books from Heritage History each 60 day term or Beautiful Feet’s curriculum for the year.
Thank you for the great ideas! I’m not the original poster, but this is something I would very much like to do for my younger two children, who will be in high school much too soon for me. 🙂
