My DD 6 has a big problem writing and recognizing numbers!Frown She has gone through 2,5 years Preschool with an academic approach and went to a private Christian School for Kindergarten (they used A Beka). A few month ago the Lord called me to start home schooling her and on Monday we started home schooling ( I had her finish up the school year). I realized during the last school year that she has a lot of problems with math and that she kept writing most numbers mirrowed. But to be honest I was overworked with full-time job and husband deployed and I didn’t really take charge of it and thought she just may “outgrow” it (what of course didn’t happen). So I started Monday really from scratch, having her copying numbers, play number recognition games and introduced the “decimal street” from MUS, non of it with any success. Yesterday I had her copy numbers 0-50 and she did very good and precise work and she got so excited that she wanted to keep writing numbers past the 50 but even after writing 50 numbers and having them right there in front of her she started writing 51 and 52 mirrowed again! She only does that with numbers, not with letters, she actually reads and writes pretty good for a 6 year old. I start getting the feeling that there is more to it then just “not getting math”Undecided Does anyone has a suggesstion where to go from here or does anyone have a child with the same problems?

Don’t panic!  If she has been writing her numbers wrong for several years it’s going to take a little while to correct.  I’d pick one number a week to work on and find a program that “talks” you through writing the number the correct way, that way everytime she writes the number she says the rhyme that goes with it.  “Across the sky and down from heaven, that is how we make a seven”  etc…

Have you watched the Simply Charlotte Mason all day seminar?  I’d highly recommend it.  It will help keep things in perspective and train you in how to use CM’s gentle methods.

    Two thoughts come to mind:

First, using a handwriting approach that has her “saying” what she is to do could help – we use Peterson Directed Handwriting and the big focus in the beginning is air writing, then large whiteboard, then on paper (you’re moving from large muscle to small).  Each letter has a chant of the strokes, as do the numbers.  I’m sure there are other programs set up similarly.

Second, reversals could be an indicator of some dyslexia (there are many varieties), so if things don’t turn around with focused work on letters for a while that might be something to check into.  Maybe.

Either way, it can’t be changed in a day, it will take retraining her to write it correctly, with practice every day for a long period of time (I would say if there is no improvement in a few months of consistent practice then explore other options like dyslexia?).

My first daughter struggled with this too, and we used MUS Primer, slowly, to help her through it.  That was 3 years ago and she still reverses 9’s.  I would say (although I’m not an expert) that what you’re doing to help her will help, with time.  I agree that what she’s used to doing (essentially a habit) will be corrected with time.  I also agree with Tristan that if, after a time, you feel she isn’t making progress (even slowly) that making sure there isn’t something else going on would be a good idea.  My daughter was (and is) a slow-to-get-it reader, and also reverses b’s and d’s still.  I will tell you, however, that I asked Sonya about this at a convention, and she assured me that in this age range (she’s 8 1/2) reversals are still common and normal.  Just look for progress-even slow progress.

And well done, listening to your Father and bringing your sweet girl home.  You’re doing great, Momma!!

Thank you ladies you all were a big help! I guess it was just one of this “home school newbie” moments were you can’t see the obvious. Embarassed It was really silly of me to expect a change of a “habit” within 5 daysEmbarassed. yes I read lots of CM books and 2 of her orginal series but guess it will take a while to apply all that I have learned to home school reality.Embarassed BTW after complaining here today she did super good Laughing I had here write 5 rows of numbers 0-9 and she did it perfectly without one mistake. After that we did number recognition and she did it without a mistake too! Only thing I changed today was, I played some Mozart very low in the background and my DD loves music. Wonder if that really helped or it may have just been a coincident.  Anyway now I feel so silly.  Guess I am the one who needs to learn alot , not just my DDWink

    Christine,

Keep playing the Mozart; there really is something to that.

Also, there’s never a need to feel silly here. Everyone is so helpful and caring–and really excited that you have your daughter home with you now!!
