I have a child that will need to listen to an audio player for books. (as recommended by specialist.) The need is for this child to “hear and follow” the words with eyes.
I need to use 1st – 2nd grade level type of reading material. ( this is for a mentally retarded teen )
I was told to look at MP3 or IPODS. I’m not even sure how to figure out the exacts of what would best fit for ability to put a whole book on it or how much space would be needed etc…
My price range is limited. Preferrably under $175 or really close to that. 🙂
I would appreciate your suggestions.

If you don’t have an Apple computer you can download iTunes and listen directly to things on the computer through iTunes. Also, you can listen directly to books at http://www.librivox.org. These are free resources. We personally have iPods but we listen on our computer more than we do on iPods. However, we do really enjoy our iPods. I would think a Nano would be sufficient for your needs. You don’t have to keep everything on the iPod. After you are done listening, you can remove it from the iPod but keep it in iTunes.

I have dozens of audio books on our 4g ipod nanos. We paid $99 each for them. Also, as Polly mentioned, it doesn’t all have to fit on the ipod at one time.
My kids also have small portable speakers for their ipods, which they prefer over headphones – found here for $13 – http://www.walmart.com/ip/iSymphony-Portable-Mini-Speaker-System-for-iPods-MP3-Players-Black/7789713.
I have several picture books that my MIL read aloud and recorded for my kids with music. I’d be happy to share with you if you pm me, if you’re interested.
We love audiobooks!

I would recommend Itunes and an ipod nano as well, my daughters use one, and I have a touch. A nano is great though and quite big enough – they also use speakers with it and also listen online to music and books. Great for the car as well.

This ipod nano… Will she be able to “see” the words being read as well as hear too? Ugh! I feel like I am so not in the technical world! LOL! I thought I was doing great getting a Vista machine a couple of years ago

Meadowlark – I pm’d you. At the top of the screen by your name and the log out, click on private messages.
Think of the iPod as a old fashioned walkman, but there are no cassette tapes. Basically you download audio files from the internet or upload them to your computer from cds and then you sync your ipod with the computer and the files are on the ipod for your listening pleasure. To read along, you’d need the book.
