My 8 and nearly 6 year olds really like the SOTW series, listening to it on audio CD. They’ve truly gained a love of history. We supplement it a great deal w/ SCM’s book recommendations, as well as items from a variety of other homeschool lists. Real books, of course! Just wondering what you all would use or have used as a spine for your young children. We will be heading toward Module 5 next year. Have any other you successfully integrated SOTW 3 into SCM Module 5? In some ways I want to find a different, more God-centered spine, but my kids are just too young to appreciate Sonya’s recommended Famous Men of the  . . . . series. Thoughts? I’ve looked into Truthquest, Guerber’s books, etc. But wanted your opinion! Thanks!

We used some Famous Men of the Middle Ages with my 8 and 6 year old, but my 6 year old did not retain anything. I have been doing AO2 concurrently with it and they were retaining those spines more. So I stuck with the AO2 spines and am using all of the other SCM books. We just started the Renassance section two weeks ago. I purchased the Guerber book for this period and am plugging it in instead of the Famous men book. It has been a much better fit for my kids. All of the other books have been wonderful.

Just wanted to jump in here and offer some hope. We are in the process of finishing up two new history spines for the younger children to be used with Module 5. The Famous Men books will still be used as independent reading for the older grades, but we’re hopeful that these new spines will be “just the ticket” for the younger grades. One spine is on American history and one on World History for that time period. We’re hoping to have them ready this spring.

Woo Hoo! I like the Famous Men series, but it has been a big s-t-r-e-t-c-h, even for dd10. I’d love for you to have something for the youngers for all modules. Hint hintWink

not sure why my post didn’t go through earlier.

The “spine” I use is All Through the Ages, by Christine Miller.  (She does suggest Guerber’s books as she’s brought them back to life so to speak.)  But the Guerber’s books are sometimes more for younger kids and less for olders.  I read the info. to/with the kids at the beginning of each time period.  Then, we use books based on age/ability levels for family read alouds, assigned reading, audio book choices, etc.  It has worked nicely for all the ages in our family.  I’m thinking it will work well for those using the CMOrganizer.  I plan on continuing to use it once I start using the CMO.  I do something similar on paper already, but WOW!  The CMO is exactly what I need to help with all our adventures.  Oh, ATA covers history chronologically.  And, it has sections for geography, math, science, arts, music, and the classics, too.  It’s an aweseme resource for CM and/or classical hsers.  HTH, Becca<><

Becca, ATA is an excellent resource, that I do use. However, it isn’t really a spine book, but rather a very helpful booklist. The Guerber books could certainly be used as spines, though. This may be what you meant, but I didn’t want anyone to mistake ATA as a living book.

Great, Sonya, thanks for the hope on some new avenues for Module 5 for younger ones!
