Geography is one area we have not dwelt on much, because of my daughter’s learning disabilities. She is now 12 and, although she still has visual/spatial perception problems and can’t make much sense out of maps, I think she may be able to understand some things in the geography books I have been reading about. Queens has a remake of CM’s Geography book, and I was reading on another thread about Long’s Home Geography. Someone recommended using Long’s first. Since I can get it online without having to buy it, thanks to a link someone gave on the other thread, I could start doing it now. Do you think this sounds like a good choice for my daughter, given her processing difficulties? Or would CM’s be better for that. If it is benefit to use both, I can start one now and do the other later.
What about this scenario? We are using Mystery of History 1, Creation to Christ, along with Journey Through the Bible. This will probably last us through most of next school year. I was thinking I could start Long’s one day a week along with MOH. The other area I was hoping to include was simple map work to go along with the area of study. I did print out an outline map of Africa and had my daughter color Egypt on it. But the maps in MOH would make no sense to her visually, so I am not sure how else to proceed with this. I want to give her an idea of where the Israelites went after they left Egypt, but I’m not sure how best to do that. Maybe there is no simple way. I can show her on a globe the general area, but that is tiny. And she needs large print. I’m just talking through this:) I try to show her things on the globe sometimes, so she can at least see what part of the world something took place. But flat maps of one general area do not make much sense to her. That is why I have not done a lot of geography with her. When she was younger, and she learned about the Pilgrims and other explorers, it was a little easier to show on the globe a general route across the Atlantic Ocean. But, giving her a map of the Chesapeake Bay and land around it didn’t offer much understanding. I think the enormity of even our country is hard for her to minutely comprehend. Sometimes when we are driving an hour or two, she will ask if we are still in Pennsylvania. She has a very limited concept of time and space. I want to give her as much as I can without frustrating her. So, any thoughts on maps? Maybe just learning the basics in the Geography books would be enough right now?
