    Hi,

I could use help planning for American History next year with my son, he will be in 8th grade.

I would like to use Early Modern & Epistles, and I’ll buy Stories of America Volumes 1 & 2. We will also buy the recommended living books for grades 7-9. We will only do American History & skip everything else (no geography, world history, etc. – we are covering that elsewhere).

Here’s my question though. The only thing I see required is reading, written narration & Book of Centuries.

For our annual evaluation is this sufficient for our portfolio? I kind of would like to add a little more to put in our portfolio. Can you offer any other enjoyable activities or idea that we can do alongside our US History?

I appreciate your help, and I hope this makes sense. I’m on my phone and the font is smaller than a gnat.

    Thanks!

Hi Amy! All we have ever done for social studies is read great books,  write narrations, do map work, and keep a book of centuries as well as a list of books read. As far as whether or not this is enough for an evaluation, it all depends on your state’s requirements and your evaluator.

We live in Florida and I choose my evaluators very carefully to make sure they look favorably on Charlotte Mason methods. They have always been very pleased with our social studies endeavors. Florida law doesn’t specify what subjects we are to study as homeschoolers, nor how we are to study them.

What are your state laws regarding homeschooling and what do your evaluations consists of?

    I’m in Florida too! 🙂

Okay, well perhaps that will be okay then. My son is coming home from public school, so I’m sure my paranoia has more to do with me feeling the need to prove what he’s learning is “enough” (probably to myself as well).  Maybe I’ll add in some go-along videos, field trips & perhaps activities that lend themselves to what we are studying. Thank you!!

All that’s in my daughters’ portfolios for history (we’re in PA; my girls are currently in 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades) are written narrations.  I do buy the Draw and Write Thru History book that correlates with our history time period and they work at drawing pictures out of that while we’re doing our history read alouds.  (But I put those in the art section of our portfolio.)  Then I list field trips (but not all are historical) in another section of the portfolio.
