We’ve done EFTTC and SG and are just needing something a little workbooky for my 10 year old – with four younger siblings, I just don’t have tons of time to pick through her narrations to find things that need to be corrected and then work on them one at a time until they are covered.  I’m wanting and all in one (not years and years worth) of grammar so that once we get through it, we’ve covered it all.  We’ll skip what she does well with, but want to make sure I’m not missing basic things.  For example those words that sound the same but are spelled differently – our/are – were/we’re – properly punctuating quotations – she likes workbooks, loves diagramming, understands the parts of speech, has much of CC’s essentials grammar charts memorized, but just needs some help in the basics.

    Thanks!

Anything from the language series by Rod and Staff might be helpful. They are not workbooks, but they do seem to fit the bill for what you are trying to accomplish. You could look through the table of contents and just use the lessons needed. I do not use them myself, but we used them in a co-op we did several years ago so I am familiar with them. I don’t think that is the ideal way to do it, but, like you, I am schooling five of my children currently and sometimes we just have to make do with what we can.

have you looked into the language lessons series by Queen Homeschool? i like them at this age because it gently introduces many of the language arts , grammar being one of them. when my son does any dictation , and we find errors i then go over the grammar rule he had covered at some point.

Rod and Staff was too teacher intensive for the older levels for us.  Growing with Grammar solved all of our Grammar woes!  The student book is written directly to the student and the answer booklet means no time at all from me.  My oldest dd loves it and has learned so much. The scope and sequence can give you an idead of which book to start. http://www.growingwithgrammar.com

Another fan of Growing With Grammar here, for all the reasons stated above by Heather.   A year ago my boys thoughts they would never “get” grammar, much less “like it”…

What can I say?   I am absolutely in awe that with GWG my boys REALLY like grammar (and language arts) now.  It is not CM, but for us, it has been a great fit.

@ Angelina, I tried everything with my oldest dd (age 11). Last year, I started her with level 4 and she sailed through it. At the beginning of this year I thought I’d try another grammar program but she begged me to give her the next GWG level.  She loves grammar now. 🙂

@Heather, great to hear your story.  Like you, we started with level 4 of GWG.  My son was 10.5 at the time.  We love that the program has a STUDENT manual.  Sets the expectation right from the start, without any confusion or second guessing, that the student is perfectly capable to teach himself the material.  Every so often we’ll come to a more challening concept, and my son will try to beg for extra hand holding (or insist that it’s too hard).  I simply pick up the GWG student manual.  Within seconds I’m able to locate the ONE sentence that gives the answer to his quandry and place the book in front of him.  Then I say aloud, “What is the title of this book?”  And he says, sheepishly, “Ya, ya, Mom, I know…. it’s the STUDENT manual!”  Then we have a little laugh, and he gets to work.  I love that the student manual is so clear and easy.  It gives us answers to what might otherwise be an “I HATE GRAMMAR” moment – without any stress or worry whatsoever.

Any updates or other suggestions?  I am considering Growing with Grammar after Writing Tales, but skipping those incorrect exercises that has the student correct them, since this goes against CM.  I need something independent too.

The new Life of Fred Language Arts books are fun for Junior High and High School.

    Growing with grammar ?

Is the idea the books are set per grade?  I don’t have any interest in starting grammar till 4th grade or so.  Would you say then start with level 4?

Also, anyone use it through gr 8 and feel they had covered all the basics and … then what?
