We are using a combination of books to teach character and we are on attentiveness now.  We use Laying Down the Rails for Children, Character Trails, and we are repeating some lessons in a Child’s Book of Character Building (which I let her color those pictures).  Character Trails has only one coloring page each lessons, pertaining to the Bible story.  If I don’t keep her busy coloring or drawing, she gets distracted, even though we are working on growing in the habit of attentiveness.  She is an active learner.  We are going to start learning to crochet, so she might do that during read alouds when she is a bit older and confident in her skills.  What about paper dolls?

Or, is it okay for her to work on copywork during our read aloud story?  I am afraid the multi-tasking would get inferior results and interfere with the habit of attentiveness.  Thoughts?

So does anyone know of a coloring book like Dover that has character traits?  Otherwise I will just have her draw.  Thanks.

I would not do copy work during read aloud time. Both require full attention.

My kids like to draw while I read, playdough is also pretty popular while I read.

I used to want them to sit on the couch all cuddled up with me, but they actually do better when their hands are busy. I am similar, I actually listen better when I my hands are busy, even just doodling…
