My daughter read Catherine Marshall’s Christy and Julie this past summer/fall and LOVED them both so much. She really wants to find books that are similar to those, so I’m hoping my fellow SCM’ers can help me out. Anyone have some suggestions we can look into? She’s 16 and I wouldn’t classify her as a super strong reader, but when she likes something, she definitely delves into it. I just would really like to find her some free reading that would keep encouraging her to take up reading.

Has she read Stepping Heavenward by Elizbeth Prentiss? That is the best book of all time! 🙂 It is one of the most life changing books in my opinion! And once you pick it up, you will want to read the whole thing at one sitting! However, it really needs to be read slowly! HTH

The Emily of New Moon series by L.M. Montgomery (and Anne too!). Little Women (and the others). I’m a huge fan of Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell, but I’m not sure if that’s too difficult for fun reading.

It’s hard to choose, as I am a book lover, but I have loaned my Gene Straton Porter books to various girls of that age, and they love them, as did I. My favourite is Laddie, but Freckles and The Girl of Limberlost usually come up more frequently on book lists.
