I will try to make this short. I started out the year with two of my kids ready for pre algebra. They had done different math series up until this time, and I want them now to use the same program. We tried an online program, Horizons pre algebra (which went too fast) and finally settled on Lial’s Pre Algebra. They both are doing ok and understanding it, but one of my children really “hates” math now.
I was thinking about putting them in Math u See Pre algebra, but I have two concerns.
1- we have already tried 3 programs and I hate to switch AGAIN
2. I am not sure of the rigor of math u see-it seems a bit less rigorous than others I have looked at.
I see positives to math u see also. One of these children have already used math u see, and knows the flow of it. It would also be easy to continue math u see through high school, as I have had my eldest use their geometry and pre calculus program. She seems to be doing well as she is now doing Calculus at the community college at age 17. So maybe I shouldn’t worry so much about the rigor!!
Well, there is a point at which one might consider not changing again, but then if something really is a better fit . . . I have never changed math, myself, but have certainly changed other things aplenty and my kids did fine.
I’ve used MUS for 16 years. All of my sons have done very well with it. If you do the honors and really do the program to mastery, we’ve had no issues with it not being rigorous enough. Both my graduated boys did very well on their precollege tests and both have moved on to college calculus with no issues. My current 14yo is in geometry and doing fine. MUS has certainly worked for us.
A willingness to learn and mastery of the subject is way more important than ‘rigor’ if the ‘rigor’ kills the learning spirit and only exposes them to various topics they have no interest in anyways. Many times lack of interest is b/c they don’t feel able anyways, so why try?!
Better to slow down and learn it well in a format more in tuned with that student and their learning style, etc., than try to ‘force an unwilling student to learn.
Blessings,
Jo
