If your required to school 180 hours does that need to fall within the months the public school operates (Sept – June)? We’re schooling year round and I wasn’t sure if I need to hit 180 by June or if I can just continue. Does anyone know this or is it specific to my state (PA)? Thanks.
Are you a member of HSLDA? If not I highly recommend that you join, you can probably find the basic answer to your question on their website, but if you can’t a phone call to them is going to give you the accurate LEGAL answer. My husband is an attorney, but when we have a question about homeschool law in our state my husband reads the law and then calls HSLDA if he needs clarification. PA – from what I understand – can be difficult to work with as homeschoolers, so I wouldn’t leave it up to the opinion of a lay person to make sure I was in compliance. (Even if they have spoken directly with an attorney, it’s always best to speak to one yourself and much better when they are an expert in homeschool law – because not only can they interpret the law, but because of their extensive knowledge of how it’s been applied in your state, they can explain possible problems even IF YOU ARE COMPLYING with the law.)
In PA, our school year runs from July 1 – June 30. I’m not sure if all states are the same. You could find out from your school district or your evaluator if you have one. We can begin a new year July 1st if our affidavit and objectives are in. But, the person in charge does want the paperwork by August 1st. Technically, we can wait until the end of June to finish, but we don’t school year round, so I like to finish in May.
I’m in PA – the 180 days have to fall between July1 and June 30, provided your affadavit is in my July 1. In the school district we live in, they like you to hand in your portfolio for the year you’re finishing up and your affadavit for the next school year all at the same time, before June 30. So, that’s what I do.
We start our school year (I start counting days) July 1…..and we finish somewhere in May, somtimes June, depending on life.
