This question is for Doug, or other technologically inclined helper.
Please tell me the minimum speed we’d need in order to watch occasional educational lectures/videos and possibly use the CMO in a reasonable way. We are going to set up an installation in the next couple of weeks (provided we can receive signal. Another provider could not reach is even though the equipment was less than 6 miles away!)
That’s a tough question because the real answer is “it depends.”
A lot of it depends on the videos you want to watch and how the provider’s technology is set up. For example, YouTube does a pretty good job of figuring out your speed and scaling things down as needed. The quality suffers on slower speeds but it still works. The same goes for Netflix and many others.
Some of it depends on how long you’re willing to wait for things to load. The slower the speed, the longer it takes for a video to initally load and begin playing.
Slower speeds also mean every web page you view will take longer to load. The CM Organizer will work on slower speeds but there will be more waiting between doing things.
The impatient and geek side of me says go for the top. But the economy side of me says scale back. You might try somewhere in the middle (3Mbps) and see how that feels. You can always adjust it as needed later.
This is actually helpful. 🙂 I had no clue and didn’t want to over spend. I assumed that videos might not even be viewable at certain speeds. I’m patient. I’ve has dialup a few years ago and only ditched it once it became impossible for anything to load. iPhone just isn’t working for me as the only source. So, I’m ditching it to get Internet. Thanks for your help, Doug. I appreciate it!
