Jackson just came up with a good idea that I thought I’d pop on and share …. when doing long division with multi digit divisors (or other math where there are a lot of numbers to keep in line) turn your notebook paper sideways so that the numbers can be written in columns and therefore kept in straight rows.  Seems like it would help the younger ones too.

That is suggested also in Math on the Level. Makes sense to me! My boys are still in the early math phase but I keep trying to tell them that being neat is half the battle in math. If you don’t know where your numbers are in relation to the others, you can’t do it!

This would be helpful for multiplication too!  We are just starting multiplying mult-digit numbers…I’ll have to give it a try!

It is also suggested in MUS.  This helps my ds, but graph paper works even better for him.

RightStart recommends grid paper… but I’ve seen the sideways suggestion too….

“I am so cool!”  (Jackson’s response to the news that real math experts do it this way too!)

Works well for my boys….otherwise, messy, messy, messy.
