I am looking at plans for next school year when I will have a newborn (along with 6th, 3rd, 1st and preschooler). I have never been great about nature study consistently, though we do have a nature club that meets twice a month and we usually journal while there. This year we used ENWC loosely as a guide, and I am considering next year following Ambleside’s nature study schedule of studying one topic per term. I am looking at using a NaturExplorers guide that fits each topic to provide further guidance. I have read lots of good reviews about NaturExplorers, but nothing specific about how long you spend using one guide, how much is nature study vs science, hands-on vs worksheets. I am looking at using each guide weekly for 12 weeks for 30-60 minutes, alternating with nature club (usually about 5-7 families) and at home with just my kids. Can anyone who has used NaturExplorers and/or followed the AO schedule of one nature topic per term share about your experience? Thanks!!
P.S. The guides I am looking at using next year are Deciduous Trees (for AO’s trees study), either Captivating Clouds or Remarkable Rain (for weather since we did astronomy this year), and Frogs and Toads (for amphibians).
This doesn’t answer your question but asks a new one! Did you use ENwC to shape any of your coop nature study? We are planning to do it with a coop next year and I would love any tips for successfully using it w a twice a month coop! Also I did use naturexplorers a few years ago and loved it. I think 12 weeks is a great pacing for each guide. They offer tremendous freedom for how deep and long you desire to go.
Mamaterry, I used it loosely. Pretty much as each month approached, I would look at the 4 topics and pick two that would work in our setting. Many of the topics were set at night, which wouldn’t work! Sometimes the season wasn’t quite right (we are in SC). It has been nice to do the seasonal pond and tree study every couple months. We ended up taking a break from early Dec to late Jan so we definitely missed a couple topics.
