Has anyone tried this for older ones? My 14yr.old is like my 12yr.old in maturity. I have the Comstock book but I really don’t know how to begin, supplies, and I need something that would tell me what to do. Are there Nature books that are outstanding that would draw them outside? They need stories that would do this. I tried to read to them a story but it told about a butterfly or narration of one migration etc. but no quotes like it was tallking and they didnt like it at all.
I love the outdoors and we need to get outside. We live in a very beautiful area!
The second is the book “Wild Days” by Karen Radcliffe. It has great info about making nature (and other) notebooks.
One thing told about in Wild Days is how she started them in nature study… a part of that was pretty much bribery lol. They went to a nature place, and while her kids were playing, her mother (their grandma) and her started painting. After a bit, they took out some cookies, which of course got the kids attention…. She said that cookies were for people that were painting (something from nature). The kids asked “May we paint?”. As they painted, they ate a cookie. She then offered an extra cookie for writing their name and date. The another for those that wrote something about the day on the page.
Of course, she isn’t suggesting cookies for every time…. but it made for an enjoyable introduction.
I don’t know if your girls like to read or if you enjoy reading aloud together……but the Gene Stratton Porter novels are very fun stories that incorporate tons of nature. I’d probably start with A Girl of the Limberlost for girls your ages. While these would fall more under literature then science I think they would make a very nice addition to nature study with older children and maybe encourage then to develop an interest in being outside, nature notebooks, Anna Comstock, etc.
Thanks for the ideas…I will check them out. What is your thought about Sonja’s nature book? Would it be to young for them at 12 and 14? They have read Girl of the Limberlost and really liked it but I don’t know how to get that going “outside’.
i found a awesome looking nature study handbook/suggestions book broken up by season and month; it also includes accompanying poetry! tons of living book suggestions, too! it’s very inexpensive, and it’s on currclick.com. i plan to get it. you can see nearly the whole thing in sample format.
And it is Fantastic!! I also found a book on nature studies in New Zealand where my oldest girl is studying Midwifery for three years so it was a double win for me!
Oh I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Nature Study book suggested over at Currclick. I own it. 😀 It’s big so I snagged the ebook and the “real” book 😀 Even living overseas I find it works because I pay attention to the seasons vs the months. I love that it encourages more then just what people anticipate that Nature Study is. We think of looking at animals and trees and flowers. This is so much more!!
