I would love to hear what nature study looks like in your home. Would love to draw off of others’ ideas. What do you include?
We are doing a homemade Botany next school year using mostly literature resources. My daughters (8th grade twins) are designing an outdoor garden together. They are reading about how to treat the soil. I have given them freedom to plant whatever their hearts desire.
I purchased a DVD taught sketching class for us to do together.
They will be keeping a nature journal 3-4 days a week. One day I am requiring a sketch. The other days they are free to write a poem, haiku, or simply journal what they are seeing and how it makes them feel.
We visit the Los Angeles Arboretum once a month and the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical in Claremont once a month, so two out-of-our-yard experiences each month. Our pass includes both locations which is fantastic!
Share what you have done for Botany and/or nature study?
Gardening is great with botany. So is visiting arboretums or botanical gardens. Check within your community – are there any master gardeners who would share information? Does anyone farm or garden in your church or extended community that would welcome a visit from your teens? My just graduated daughter is working at an organic local farm all summer before she heads to college in the fall.
I actually did choose some titles from Guest Hollow! I had many books I wanted to reuse from my 3 previous students/children, found a few things at Guest Hollow, and I would say botanical visits, nature journaling, and our gardens will be a good 50% of our class. That makes me really happy!
This morning I was at my ladies Bible study at church and one of the ladies brought us all a potted basil plant. I found out her husband has a greenhouse and raises his own herbs as a hobby. He sent her to Bible study with 50 little plants which was just about the coolest thing ever! I asked her if we could visit and she said absolutely! Thanks for the idea!
