Can anyone recommend a nice quality nature journal for my dd? Ones we have had in the past have been small or the pages have ripped out too easily.

    Thanks

We use 90lb mixed media paper that is spiral bound with no perforations. We have these custom made in bulk for our co-op from Miller Pads and paper, but I know they have a similar book ready made. These have been terrific. Strathmore is another good brand, but avoid perforations. We tried some hardback ones once and while the paper was great, they didn’t lay flat and were difficult to use.

We purchased our journals at Hobby Lobby.  They come in various sizes, but we chose smaller ones this year….will go back to a bit larger next time.  They have a stretchy band to keep them closed, which we like.  There’s also a little pencil holder (if that’s important to you.)  I believe they are between 70-90 b. weight paper. Won’t change to another paper weight!  It’s awesome!  This particular journal has a black cover.  I recall it being available in 4″x6″, 5″x7″ and 8″x10″.  These are portrait orientations, but I do think landscape was an option, too.  We’ve enjoyed them.  I chose the smaller size because the larger ones were overwhelming to our youngest.  The next time we purchase them, they will choose their own style and size, but keep the paper weight.  It works very well with various media.

This MIGHT be the link to what we have http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/escalada-5-1/4×8-1/2-camo-sketch-book-628248

We will be using Beginning Watercolor Journaling this coming year.  If we find that a different paper works better for watercolor, I will have to eat the words above…..at least for journals that include watercolor.  Wink

Just saw Christie’s post.  Have to agree about the hardback problem as far as laying flat is concerned.  I’m sure what we have is NOT the one in the link.  I used Christie’s recommendation for 90lb. weight, so the one in the link cannot be the exact journal….it’s 74#.

We used perforated journals a year, or two with our older children…..frustrating.

@Christie, if there is something similar to what you are using for co-op, what are the benefits of having them custom made?  Were you able to choose something that isn’t available anywhere else?  I’m curious.  We are seriously getting into our journaling and I’m wanting to know all the various options.  Our youngest keeps her’s with her no matter where we go.  She journals in the garden, on the road, after park days and field trips.  I’d like to provide her with as much encouragement and the best resources we can at this point.

Reading The Living Page right now and I’m recognizing her as a serious “Keeper” already.  I had to work at this happening with our older children.  She naturally captures every thought, which may just be learned from the atmosphere I had to work hard to create with her older siblings….I’m not sure.  She is just so compelled to do it, I think it’s inborn.

We chose the weight to handle dry brush watercolor which we use often. We were simply exploring options and Randy Miller of MPP had the cheapest option for us. Ours is 60 pages to last 2 co-op years, spiral bound with chipboard back and marble cover. We keep our journals, paints, pencils in cotton muslin/canvas bags stamped with kids names. We do have some with hardback covers, spiral binding, & the elastic band at home. They are terrific, but too pricey for our co-op.

    I am considering these http://www.dickblick.com/products/mirage-sketchbooks/

I like that they can personalize the cover on the tan books.

The bags are adorable & stamped with kids’ names and a lovely bird. We used gorgeous butterfly and bird stickers on the front of the journals that are also stamped with names.

Missceegee, I have searched Miller’s site and cannot find a 90# mixed paper book. Do you have a link? Thanks.
