I came across this in a book of therapeutic play activities I am reading (The Out of Sync Child has Fun), and thought that some of you might be able to use it to help include your little ones in nature study! The book recommends it for ages 2 and up, but says that it is enjoyable for all ages.
It’s so simple–take a roll of masking tape, and cut a piece large enough to go around your child’s (or your) wrist. Put it on the wrist, sticky side out, before going on a nature walk. As you walk, pick up various small things…flowers, leaves, moss, etc….let your child feel the textures and talk about them before sticking them on his/her “bracelet”. By the time you get home, you or your child is wearing a beautiful natural wristband, that can then be hung up and displayed as a memento of your walk! 🙂 I’ll definitely be trying this with DS as soon as the weather is nice.
I did this years ago with my two oldest. After cutting them off their wrists at home, we added another piece of tape to the other side (so the nature stuff was on the inside of the tape) and put them in their nature notebooks. They still remember doing this (it’s probably been 8 years!).
Alice-you’re welcome! We’re STILL having nasty weather here (narrowly escaped 2 tornadoes that passed by us yesterday) or we would have already tried it! 🙂
This is so much fun! I have done this several times with my kids and our girl scout troop. We have used both wide masking tape and duct tape. What we have done to preserve the bracelets is stick a piece of plastic wrap onto the sticky parts after we are done with our walk – it is kind of hard to describe but the wrap is a bit flexible so it just bends around the flowers and leaves and bits and you press it down where the sticky tape is still exposed. It leaves a nice shiny surface and holds everything in. Then you just trim off the overhanging wrap with scissors so it looks tidy.
