I’ve been homeschooling for 4 1/2 years now, and I have never been to a convention.  However, there is one in Nashville that has lots of great speakers listed, Sonya being one of them.  Has anyone gone to any of these and are they worth it?  I could stay at my parents house in TN, but it would still be an hour drive.  What is your experience with these?  Oh, I would not be taking the kids, I’m still uneasy with dropping them off with people I do not know. (I’m a little oversheltering Smile

    Thanks,Paula

I have been to the conventions in Arlington, Texas, but Sonya wasn’t there :(.

The first couple of times I went, the ‘floor’ of the convention was a bit overwhelming. It was like a gigantic homeschooling bazaar with shiny books and techniques and curriculum everywhere! It was a real eye-opener regarding all the different curriculums and teaching styles out there.

It just reinforced my love of the CM method, and I stopped trying to purchase curriculum at conventions. I can analyze what will work for us better through sites like this and my own research, and I don’t want to spend money on the spur of the moment just b/c something I am holding looks ‘neat’.

Now, if I could hear Sonya speak or attend a CM oriented convention…that would be worth doing! I do think that taking time out of your daily grind to ‘sharpen the saw’ is well worth it, if you can get away. Sonya has so many great seminars that she offers online, but I would imagine that it would be refreshing to hear her in person. She is such an encouragement to me that I would be willing to drive the hour to hear her.

    That’s my two cents ;0).

Love love love conventions!! I have driven 4 hrs to a great one in Spartanburg, SC last yr! Worth every mile!! And every yr drive 2 1/2 hrs to go to our local one in Ga!! I think it is well worth the price to be refreshed and to “hang” out w/ like minded people!

I have seen Sonya twice…once at an all day workshop and once when I first heard about CM! She was worth a lot too!! 🙂 And if you can get away w/ out kids a bigger plus AND if you have a place to stay for FREE another plus..make that a plus plus!! Wink

Take cash most vendors nowadays accept CC but have that cash ready…bring your own snacks if they will let you…if not cash is a must for the food vendors! You may think you won’t purchase a lot but  bring a roll on suitcase or a foldable cart to drag your goodies around! I used a small suitcase for a couple of yrs and then hubby surprised me one yr by buying a cart to have! It is great to just free your arms and hands to be able to look! And even if you purchase 4 books…they tend to get heavy by the middle of the day!

Before you go have schedule printed and decide who you want to see beforehand if possible. You can always not go..but this helps so much to not get overwhelmed when you arrive wondering what are you going to do or who are you going to see. If is your first time ..you will be overwhelmed AND too excited to think! LOL

And of course, have a budget in mind and stick to it! Temptations are everywhere! Also, shop around at all the vendors tables..if you see a book you like don’t buy it immediately you may get a better bargain at another vendor. Also, the last day some vendors will mark their items down!

    Have fun!

FYI, We’ve started to fill in the SCM convention schedule so you can see where we’ll be. Sonya will only be speaking at some of those events so we will update the page with those details later.

There are also a few older articles from our blog about conventions that you might like:

Well 2flowerboys, we’re neighbors.  I’m a GA girl myself.  I was trying to decide between the Ga one and the one in Nashville, but the speakers at Nashville are just to good to give up.  Thanks for all the info.  And thanks Doug, I’m going to check out your links right now.  I’m getting excited, now if I can talk my hubby to come 🙂
