Narrations–6 year old

I am reading about two paragraphs of a chapter book to 6 year old my daughter, then asking her to narrate it.  Her narrations are usually very short, as in “They walked on the path [skip lots of events] and then got to the mountain.  That’s all I know.”  What can I do to teach her to narrate more?  Should I include questions after she is done?  I am doing this, and she knows the answers to them, but I want to make sure I am not destroying the process.  (“What happened on the path?” etc.)  After her turn, I read the rest of the chapter, and her 8 year old brother narrates it.  His narration is full and detailed, and she is sitting there hearing it.  Sometimes I narrate instead of the kids when we are short on time, as a model for them.  Will she just pick it up from the modeling?

Note: We have already read and narrated the Aesop’s Fables book, so two paragraphs from a chapter book are what I am trying to do as a “next step.”

Honestly 6 is still very young and just beginning narrations. I’d stick with just letting her brother model narrations for her and not push her at this point. We found Thornton Burgess’ books along the lines of “the tale of” some animal good after Aesop for narrating, nice short chapters.
