My son (third grade) does well to read alone (chapter books like “The Magic Tree House”) but when I have asked for a narration all I get is, I don’t remember, shrugged shoulders, or very little facts. Is the narration even necessary when he is reading to himself and if so how much do I prod? He seems to be really into the story when reading but I feel like I have to REALLY pull anything information out of him. What should I do?

You might try re-phrasing the questions.  I’ve had success by asking who they’ve met (who has your son “met” – in other words, who are the characters?)

What is the problem that needs to be solved in this book?

Who is your favorite character?  Who is your least favorite?

Have you agreed with all the actions of ____ (character)?

    Things like that.

I don’t ask for narrations from personal reading – other than the occasional “tell me about that book”.  (A real question, because I sometimes read books on my oldest daughter’s recommendation).

Thanks so much. I will definitely try that!
