ok so for my 7th grader again, we are doing as much narration as possible for several subjects. One written narration is about a book he reads as part of our history study. It is never really long but he usually gets the main points.
He has been telling me that he would prefer to write stories.
I am planning to do Write with best but we still need to catch up on some grammar first.
So this week I had him do a story w/the Story Starter.
He just goes on and on, with a lot more details then his narration and he enjoys doing that better.
Now I do not question the value of narration but do you think it is ok to drop the written narration once a week and have him write a story instead?
To do both with be quit a bit since he writes so much.
Personally I would not drop the written narration. Will he write stories on his own time or does he want you to provide story starters etc? One idea is to have him use what he reads in a story– eg set his story in the time period you are studying. “narrations” need not only be straight forward retellings.
I would not either. Story writing is a nice skill, but will only go so far in college or business. Most people don’t grow up to be novelists; there are a few. But essay and report writing is necessary in college and beyond. Perhaps right now, since he writes so much, you could alternate weeks until you feel he could do at least one of each? I do rerquire my older kids to do at least one narration a day and at least one essay a week, so at some point you’ll want to bump up his writing output.
I don’t know if my question was clear? I didn’t mean replace one by the other altogether, I meant 4 days/week written narration and one day a week oral narration and story starter.
Nebby I like the idea of having him write a story related to what we are studying.
I probably was not too clear, my brain is not very clear most of the time, it is a wonder I can somehow keep homeschooling my kids!!lol! only w/God’s power!
