While I was sitting here grading one of my 11th grader’s history essays, it hit me how narration builds the perfect foundation for essays. Teaching essays traditionally (at least in my house with no narration foundation), the student might get all structure right and the I’s dotted and the T’s crossed with each point giving backup for the thesis statement; however, many times there is missing the opinions and connectioned weaved among the factual support. What richness is missed when that is all an essay contains. But if the student is well-versed in wide-based narration (not just regurgitating the facts), he is much better prepared for writing essays that are deep in content. Now it makes sense.
